Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace, by Terry Brooks

In barren desert lands and seedy spaceports . . . in vast underwater cities and in the blackest depths of space . . . unfolds a tale of good and evil, of myth and magic, of innocence and power. At last the saga that captured the imagination of millions turns back in time to reveal its cloaked origins--the start of a legend--the story of STAR WARS. Based on the screenplay by George Lucas, this novel by master storyteller Terry Brooks probes the depths of one of the greatest tales of our time, providing rich detail and insight into the minds and motives of the characters--and shedding bold new light on Lucas' brilliant creation.   A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, an evil legacy long believed dead is stirring. Even the Jedi are caught by surprise, their attentions focused on the political unrest between the Trade Federation and the Republic. Now the dark side of the Force threatens to overwhelm the light, and only an ancient Jedi prophecy stands between hope and doom for the entire galaxy.  On the desert world of Tatooine, far from the concerns of the Republic, a slave boy works by day and dreams by night--of being a Jedi Knight and one day traveling the stars to worlds he's only heard of in stories . . . of finding a way to win freedom from enslavement for himself and his beloved mother. His only hope lies in his extraordinary instincts and his strange gift for understanding the "rightness" of things, talents that allow him to be one of the best pod racers on the planet.   In another part of the galaxy, the Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, young Obi-Wan Kenobi, are charged with the protection of Amidala, the young Queen of Naboo, as she seeks to end the siege of her planet by Trade Federation warships. It is this quest that brings Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and the Queen's beautiful young handmaiden to the sand-swept streets of Tatooine and the shop where the slave boy Anakin Skywalker toils and dreams. And it is this unexpected meeting that marks the beginning of the drama that will become legend . . . An incredible audio production complete with original Star Wars music and sound effects.

Amazon.com Review
Alexander Adams, the actor who reads this full-length novelization of Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace, actually manages to do Jar Jar better than Jar Jar himself. Although he does sound a bit like a well-meaning dad doing an impression of the gangly amphibian for his kids, that added bit of restraint and unaffected goofiness actually works. Likewise, Adams's voice--all earnest and NPR-smooth--does good service to the rest of the cast, especially with Jedi teacher Qui-Gon Jinn and (surprisingly) Queen Amidala. (Only Anakin proves a little hard on the ears at first, perhaps a little too nasal.) The book's narrative receives the same competent treatment as the dialogue, with the added oomph of both John Williams's stirring score--woven in unobtrusively--and short suites of Lucasfilm sound effects that accompany every spike in the action, whether it's R2's beeping or the metallic bang of blaster fire.

Modern marketing has made movie novelizations a necessary evil and hence suspect, but Terry Brooks proves a deft embellisher of Lucas's well-loved epic, skillfully splicing in scenes and dialogue to fill out the breakneck, foreshadowing-filled story line of Phantom Menace. But that shouldn't be surprising: Brooks has long been the equal or better of Lucas when it comes to storytelling, most notably in his long-lived Shannara series, which began with The Sword of Shannara back in 1977, the same year Star Wars hit theaters. (Running time: 9.5 hours over eight discs) --Paul Hughes

Review
"Fans expecting a typical movie novelization--one that simply parrots the screenplay for Episode I--will be pleasantly surprised. Brooks, with Lucas' cooperation, has created something else altogether; a larger story that includes all of what you've seen onscreen, but also delves deeply into the history of the galaxy and the life and mind of Anakin Skywalker."
--The Star Wars Insider

"BREATHLESS . . . FILLED WITH ACTION FROM PAGE ONE."
--The New York Post

Expands on the film, but not by much
By Stormraven24
I’m going to come right out and say it without a lot of puttering around: I was disappointed by this book. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it for what it was, but it left a lot to be desired for me. I go into novelizations expecting more depth and substance to the cinematic counterpart, and occasionally slightly better dialogue and expansion on pivotal events. That’s not the case with this one.

The biggest problem I had was the dialogue; nearly every spoken line was taken directly from the film. Read: cringeworthy (Anakin’s especially, just as in the movie). I will admit that it was better to read it than hear it, so maybe that’s why I was able to not roll my eyes as much. The book also suffers from repetitive descriptions. Do we really need to be told every other page that Panaka and Windu are dark-skinned? Or that Jar Jar has a “billed face”? Or be reminded of the characters’ full names each time the scene changes?

I may be speaking out of bias (because I’ve come to adore Qui-Gon and Padme), but I also felt that a few key scenes were glossed over too quickly. The rift between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan when the Master decided to train Anakin, Qui-Gon’s death and its impact on Obi-Wan and Anakin, and Anakin’s separation from the mother he loved so fiercely; both were extremely important, yet with a few words they were over and done with, each character seemingly fine with life mere moments after the events. Obi-Wan at this point is still very much a slave to his emotions and that feeling of betrayal was something significant for him, even when Qui-Gon explained that he thought his Padawan ready to become a Knight. It also would have been nice to have seen Obi-Wan have more time to get a handle on his rage and grief at losing his Master and life-long friend, or to give Anakin a few paragraphs of struggling to overcome his separation anxiety from the only life he’d ever known and the only person he’d ever loved.

Speaking of moving too quickly, I still don’t like how fast Anakin’s and Padme’s relationship developed. Paralleling Rose and the Doctor’s shift in affections changed in Doctor Who, one moment Anakin and Padme are friends, the next they’re in love? I understand the love-at-first-sight motif and the love-stronger-than-anything device and their prevalence within Anakin’s life story, but this book did nothing to ease that transition that made me scratch my head during the film.

Although I do have several complaints, there are a few good things that I did like. My dislike of Jar Jar was lessened thanks to Brooks going deeper into his emotions and insecurities. I also greatly enjoyed Maul’s appearances, brief as they were, because of the further insight afforded to him; I never really felt connected to him during the movie, so it’s through the books that I’ve come to like him. Brooks didn’t disappoint me on that front.

Overall I felt that this particular attempt at a novelization fell short of what it could have been. If it had been given twenty additional pages of insight into the various characters and the emotional trauma they were subjected to throughout the story I would have rated it higher. I don’t know how much of that was because of contractual obligations or simply Brooks’ style, but in the end it doesn’t matter; this was a mediocre adaptation at best, sad to say.

Competent retelling, but nothing new
By Arnold
Terry Brooks provides a competent retelling of the Phantom Menace, but that's it. There aren't any new scenes in the book and the dialogue is almost the same. You won't really learn anything new about the main characters that isn't already apparent in the film. The narration is pretty straightforward - none of the rhetorical flourishes that made Matt Stover's episode III novelization such a hit. Moreover, since Phantom Menace was such a visual experience, it just doesn't feel the same reading it on the printed page. Overall, if for some reason you have a burning desire to read rather than watch TPM, the book does a fine job retelling the story. But you're probably just better off rewatching the movie.

James Luceno's short story in the new edition is ok, but probably not worth the price of the book. It covers Darth Maul's whereabouts during TPM and his search for the Gungan cities. It comes across as very workmanlike, covering certain events that must have had to happen offscreen, rather than providing a compelling new tale. There is one emotional scene when Maul learns about Hego Damask, but since Maul is killed shortly thereafter it doesn't affect a whole lot in the end.

Phantom Menace and Darth Maul
By K. J. Smith
There are extra scenes that are not in the movie, characters thoughts are revealed and there is extra dialogue. I liked the movie but the book gives insights into characters, actions and scenes that are not possible in the movie.
There is a good pace to the book and I found it enjoyable.
This edition also has a short story Darth Maul: End Game. This expands Darth Mauls' backstory and fills in gaps in the film with what he was doing 'offscrene'. In this story we see more of Dath Sidious and what he expects from Darth Maul.
This is also an enjoyable story

Best book in its class...
By Dr. Omer H. Unalmis
This is by far the best book in its class. Being an aerospace engineer, I have known this excellent book for a long time. Yet, I have not fully realized how valuable information it had until recently: My job requires conducting experiments in high-speed facilities, and recently we were converting a Mach 5 facility into a Mach 2. This is not a simple process by any means. During this process we had to solve several issues and this book was one excellent source not only from a theoretical standpoint but also from a practical one. You can feel the valuable experience of the authors all along. If you are into experimental aerodynamics, this book is a must-have book. Period. I strongly recommend it.

Standard reference for high-speed tunnel design
By Steven P. Schneider
This book is an excellent standard reference for the design of
transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic wind tunnels. Was often used in the design of the Mach-4 and Mach-6 Ludwieg tubes at Purdue University, 1990-2001. Although it is dated, it is the only comprehensive monograph. See also "Experimental Methods of Hypersonics" by Lukasiewicz, which contains less design info.
A great deal of facility construction went on before the publication date of 1965, and not all that many facilities have been built since.

Helpful and Practical
By LindaT
By nature I'm a worry wart. I'd would have liked to blame it on my genes -- that I am a throwback to my dear maternal grandmother who was also a professional worrier. But in the long run, I knew better, and I wanted to do something about it.

So I ordered the Sedona Method.

I have carefully gone through the whole program several times. It's extremely effective if you work it. Some parts of it are repetitious, but for a reason. Some problems are more complex than others, and need more time. You have to work the system, but if you do, it will be worth it.

This program is unique in that it zeroes in on FEELINGS. Often our minds can be in the right place, but we still have emotions, feelings and gut-level issues that need to be dealt with. The course itself claims to be "simple," which is true. Religiously, it is neutral -- it can help you practice your own faith more efficiently.

However, being "simple" doesn't mean that there's no effort involved, and it isn't a magic bullet that will take care of every problem you have. But through attentive, careful practice you can get a lot of relief from the Sedona method. I have filtered several hurtful experiences through this system and have benifitted greatly.

Each of us has our own unique experiences and we will each have our own personal approach to this program.

I highly recommend it.

Sedona method

The sedona method was one of those things that I found that profoundly changed my life. I have taken the entire course and thought it was masterfull. I now have a way of addressing my emotions and feel like I'm in control. I've become more happy and aware thanks to the Sedona Method. Highly recommended.

excellent material for self transformation
By Dr. Sandeep Bhasin
I found the Sedona course excellent tool for self development. This is based on Lester Lowensons works. . Here we let go of our emotions by asking series of simple questions and intending to let go of our emotions. Deeper than emotions are our basic wants-want of approval, want of security , want of control or want of oneness. Then we let go of underlying wants and ultimately let go of ego identity in the moment.

"This delightfully written, lesson-laden book deserves a place of its own in the Baseball Hall of Fame." —Forbes

Moneyball is a quest for the secret of success in baseball. In a narrative full of fabulous characters and brilliant excursions into the unexpected, Michael Lewis follows the low-budget Oakland A's, visionary general manager Billy Beane, and the strange brotherhood of amateur baseball theorists. They are all in search of new baseball knowledge—insights that will give the little guy who is willing to discard old wisdom the edge over big money.

Book Provides an "Aha" Experience
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
I never understood nor really liked baseball. I bought the book mostly to read about the inspired use of statistics, and the creative thinking that went into looking for the real keys to victory. I can safely say that while I may not have fallen in love with baseball, I will never find it boring again. If you have someone you want to turn into a fan, this book a superb gift option. The amount of detail in this book--for example, just the description of the strike zone and what different pitches and batters do to narrow the zone, what can be known about specific individual propensities and vulnerabilities associated with that little box, are truly inspirational.

This is a really excellent book. If we managed the national security budget the way Billy Bean managed the Oakland A's, we'd have faster better cheaper military hardware, and a lot more plowshares. I was also impressed by the way in which Billy Bean built a team, in which players who might not have been individual stars excelled at setting up others in a true team effort where the group as a whole is stronger than the sum of the parts. Others have written better reviews from a baseball fans point of view--as a non-baseball fan, I can attest to this book's being an "aha" experience.

Great Baseball/Business Book for Non Baseball/Business Fans
By A. Ross
Lewis, who previously wrote some of the best books on Wall Street's go-go '80s (Liar's Poker) and Silicon Valley's go-go '90s (The New New Thing), here turns his attention to professional baseball. Now, I should preface this by saying that I used to love baseball and these days it doesn't interest me much at all. There was a time when I was a total stats geek, I bought all the Bill James abstracts, played tabletop games, etc., but a combination of playing in college and the escalating money completely turned me off to the game. I knew this was supposed to be a good book but had no intention of reading it until Nick Hornby's rave review in his column in The Believer. I figured if one of my favorite British novelists liked the book, there must be something to it. I picked it up and within ten pages I was totally hooked.

The basis for the book is the question of how the Oakland A's, one of baseball's poorest teams as measured by payroll, managed to win so many games in the first few years of the new millennium. Lewis's potentially boring answer revolves around inefficiencies in the market for players, but he weaves this story around the A's General Manager, Billy Beane. Now, if you have some axe to grind with Beane, you might as well not read the book, 'cause Lewis tends to be rather fawning in many places. Still, Beane's own background and mediocre career form the perfect framework upon which to build this story about evaluating baseball talent. Beane was a hugely athletic, "can't miss" prospect, who turned down a joint football/baseball scholarship from Stanford to sign with the New York Mets out of high school. His pro career turned out to be utterly undistinguished, and this disconnect is what drove him to seek new methods of scouting and evaluating baseball talent. It also helped matters that the A's new owners refused to spend any excess money, and demanded that the team be treated as a business. Beane jettisoned conventional scouting wisdom (and to a certain extent, methods), to focus on statistical indicators not widely followed inside baseball. Here, the book takes a detour into the realm of "sabremetrics" (the statistical analysis of baseball), and various attempts to arrive at more meaningful ways to calculating a player's offensive value.

The result of developing a criteria of player valuation that was radically at odds with the prevailing wisdom of the market was that Beane was able to get the players he liked for very cheap. The rest of the book is devoted to detailing this process. Chapter 5 is probably the best, detailing how the A's orchestrated the 2002 amateur draft so that they got an inordinate amount of players they coveted for below market value. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the loss of their three star players after the 2001 season and how managed to compensate for this. To show the Beane methodology in action during the season, the reader is taken inside several trades and roster moves. This includes a chapter on the mid-season trade for relief pitcher Ricardo Rincon, bracketed by chapters detailing Beane's pursuit of certain players who were not considered major-league material (Scott Hatteberg and Chad Bradford). The book ends on a valedictory note, as the A's set a record by winning 20 games in a row and other teams start to buy in to their methods.

It should be noted that the book is far from perfect. Lewis has an unfortunately tendency for repetition when it comes to important points and themes, hammering them home, again and again. And although he does point out many of Beane's logical inconsistencies and emotional flaws, Lewis does often come across as more of an enamored fan than a strict journalist. Some critics feel that the A's success detailed in the book was based on several star players obtained the old-fashioned way, thus disproving the whole premise. However, it has to be understood that the practices detailed in the book can't really be proven to work one way or another for another decade or so. Still the insights into challenging conventional thinking and searching for alternative data or data patterns will likely appeal to readers of Lewis' other works and are applicable far beyond baseball. And while the jury is still out, several other teams have since hired general managers with the same basic philosophy as Beane. Ultimately, it's an interesting story, and one that Lewis tells very well -- even for non baseball fans.

great book explaining what baseball GMs should do
By Michael R. Chernick
For a former baseball player Billy Beane is a rare bird as a baseball GM. He used real baseball statistics, the kind the sabermetricians use to make great trade and bring a strong team back to Oakland. He had a great advantage over other GMs because he took advantage of their ignorance and tendencies to rely on the somewhat biased eyes of basebll scouts. What Michael Lewis did with this book was to show the world of baseball how Billy Beane did it and now I am sure that other GMs like Brian Cashman at New York and Theo Epstein in Boston are catching on. I don't know how much Steve Phillips put into action when he was the Mets GM. His lack of great success there indicates that he [robably didn't follow it enough. But now as an ESPN commentator he definitely mentions it. This book si so good that the term moneyball now means the strategy that Billy Beane used. So the title of this book became a baseball term! This book is a must for managers, general managers and owners of professional baseball teams. It is also great for the fans and the fantasy baseball enthusiasts.

Along with Mike Schell's books and the ones like "Curve Ball" written by Albert and Bennett this is one of the most thoughtful and scientific books on the game of baseball, how to win at it and how to build a successful team. The other books I mentioned were written by professional statisticians. It is the great success of the statistical science of sports, sabermetrics that we are now witnessing a scientific and statistical approach to baseball and other sports that had been lacking for many years. What Beane proved with regard to money was that a small market team like Oakland without the big money of a Steinbrenner could build a great team through smart trades and drafts based on looking at the right statistics on the players, the statistics that determine value in terms of run production for offense and run prevention for pitchers and defense.

The amazon reviews of this book are almost unanymous in their praise of Lewis' book. Read it and enjoy it. If I haven't convinced you, read some of the other fine reviews here.

The Forty Rules of Love: A Novel of Rumi, by Elif Shafak

A mesmerizing tale of love that tells the fascinating story of Rumi’s life, from the author of The Bastard of Istanbul and The Architect’s Apprentice

This lyrical, imaginative novel by Elif Shafak, the bestselling author of The Bastard of Istanbul and the most widely read female writer in Turkey, unfolds in two parallel narratives. In the thirteenth century, the Sufi poet Rumi encounters his spiritual mentor, the infamous wandering dervish known as Shams of Tabriz, and is transformed from a successful but unhappy cleric into a committed mystic and advocate of love. In present day Massachusetts, an unhappy American housewife named Ella Rubenstein, inspired by Rumi's message of love, finds the courage to undertake her own transformation. Blending East and West, past and present, Shafak provides a compelling, dramatic, and exuberant account of how love works in the world.

From Publishers Weekly
Celebrated Turkish novelist Shafak (The Bastard of Istanbul) serves up a curious blend of mediocre hen lit and epic historical to underwhelming results. In present-day Boston, dull suburban mother and cheated-on wife Ella Rubinstein takes a job as a reader for a literary agent and becomes entranced by Aziz Zahara, the author of a manuscript about the relationship between 13th-century poet Rumi and Sufi mystic Shams that, for better or for worse, becomes a story-within-a-story. Aziz and Ella strike up an e-mail relationship, largely made up of Ella's midlife crisis and Aziz's philosophical replies. Meanwhile, Aziz's novel, Sweet Blasphemy, is occasionally interesting but mostly dull, weighed down by Rufi's and Shams's theological musings. Its better moments concern tangential characters; Rumi's son, Aladdin, who is resentful of his father's closeness to the mystic, and Rumi's adopted daughter, Kimya, whose doomed marriage to Shams is touching in a way Ella's failed relationship with her husband never manages. The rumblings against Shams reach a peak, and Ella and Aziz finally meet, tying the story lines together into a readable, if not enthralling, tale. (Feb.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* As in her previous book, The Bastard of Istanbul (2007), Shafak, a courageous, best-selling Turkish writer, boldly links East and West in converging narratives. In present-day Massachusetts, Ella, an unhappy housewife on the cusp of 40, begins reading manuscripts for a literary agency, and soon finds herself exchanging personal e-mails with Aziz Zahara, a wandering Sufi photographer and the author of Ella’s first assignment, an enthralling novel titled Sweet Blasphemy. It fictionalizes the true story of the esteemed thirteenth-century Muslim teacher Rumi, who undergoes a profound transformation when the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz, a renegade of strange and unnerving powers, comes to town. The two become inseparable, and as Shams shares the liberating “forty rules of love,” Rumi becomes a rebel mystic, the inventor of the “ecstatic dance” of the whirling dervishes, and a fervent and cherished poet. Under Aziz’s influence, Ella also breaks free of convention and opens herself to cosmic forces. Infused with Sufi mysticism and Rumi’s incomparable lyrics, and sweetly human in its embrace of our flaws and failings, Shafak’s seductive, shrewd, and affecting novel brilliantly revives the revelations of Shams and Rumi, and daringly illuminates the differences between religion and spirituality, censure and compassion, fear and love of life in our own violent world. --Donna Seaman

Review
"A captivating and wise book . . . The tale of the fated meeting, spiritual companionship, and tragic parting of [Rumi and Shams of Tabriz] is beautifully recounted in The Forty Rules of Love. . . . Shafak draws on facts from Rumi's and Sham's biographies and brings them to life with deft storytelling."
--Associated Press

"A gorgeous, jeweled, luxurious  book . . . The past and the present fit together beautifully in a passionate defense of passion itself."
--The Times (London)

"In this appealing fable, Turkish author Elif Shafak toggles between characters from different times: a modern American housewife and a thirteenth-century poet. . . . The universal theme is struggle between the rational mind and the aching heart. Shafak's heroine yields to the latter and never looks back."

I so wanted to love this book . . .
By godzilla
I tried hard to overlook its quirks, but I found myself increasingly put off by the author's fondness for telling rather than showing and by the wooden characters (especially, sadly, Rumi and Shams) who seem to endlessly proclaim their beliefs and feelings without having any inner lives. I couldn't connect much with any of them. Also, the book seems carelessly edited. In one instance, the character of Rumi's wife gives a first-person account of his dismay when she cleaned the books in his library during their first year of marriage: yet a few sentences further on, she mentions this happening "after eight years of marriage". Word choices sometimes seem inappropriate or at least clumsy, which may be due to the author writing in English rather than Turkish (still, an editor should have helped with that).

I did stay with it until the end, due to the appeal of the subject matter, the historical period, some interesting perspectives on Islam and the Abrahamic religions, and the beguiling Forty Rules themselves. Alas, I can only give it a lukewarm recommendation.

Such a delight - I didn't want it to end!
By Michelle Walker
This book is like butter - soooooooo delicious and so necessary. It's been such a long time since I read a book I love this much! Wonderful story - historically and spiritually. Yes the contemporary story of Ella - her character is kind of annoying - BUT I think the author did that on purpose so you judge her and thereby later in the story can examine your capacity for compassion (or lack thereof) as one of the most important Forty Rules. I'm already looking for my next book by this same author. So you can check my review style against what you might like: super boring/inane fiction books I've read recently - Girl on The Train, Gone Girl, and the super disturbing, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. If you loved those books, then The Forty Rules of Love may be too deep for you!

A charming, witty story punctuated by the wisdom of the ages.
By Jinson
A charming, witty story punctuated by the wisdom of the ages. Right away, Elif Shafik tells us what will happen to Shams of Tabriz at the end of the story, but this is quite skilful; what is important about the story is the tortuous route that Shams chose to take to that final pass, not the event itself. Additionally the modern story makes the ancient tale much more poignant and relevant than it would have been told on its own.

The tragic nature of both ancient and modern tales serves to highlight the joy of the Sufi message; all of us have divinity within and only need to search for it. The backdrop of life can be immensely distracting or just the right experience to follow this quest. It only depends on your point of view, some discipline and you can grasp hold of that lasting joy.

Shams, the iconoclast, who consistently destroys the empty notions which litter his faith, is a familiar figure to this Zen Buddhist reader. 'If you see the Buddha, kill him.' There is no general notion of Buddha that is of any use because we need to experience what he means at first hand. Only then can we understand his teachings fully. But that journey is entirely personal. Sufism puts across the same message and I find this very comforting.

Being a complete newcomer to Sufism, I have learned a great amount here and want to know more. Any book that has this kind of effect on me ranks very highly in my estimation.

Ivan Ramen: Love, Obsession, and Recipes from Tokyo's Most Unlikely Noodle Joint, by Ivan Orkin, Chris Ying

The end-all-be-all guide to ramen from Ivan Orkin, the iconoclastic New York-born owner of Tokyo's top ramen shop.

In 2007, Orkin, a middle-aged Jewish guy from Long Island, did something crazy. In the food-zealous, insular megalopolis of Tokyo, Ivan opened a ramen shop. He was a gaijin (foreigner), trying to make his name in a place that is fiercely opinionated about ramen. At first, customers came because they were curious, but word spread quickly about Ivan’s handmade noodles, clean and complex broth, and thoughtfully prepared toppings. Soon enough, Ivan became a celebrity—a fixture of Japanese TV programs and the face of his own best-selling brand of instant ramen. Ivan opened a second location in Tokyo, and has now returned to New York City to open his first US branch.

Ivan Ramen is essentially two books in one: a memoir and a cookbook. In these pages, Ivan tells the story of his ascent from wayward youth to a star of the Tokyo restaurant scene. He also shares more than forty recipes, including the complete, detailed recipe for his signature Shio Ramen; creative ways to use extra ramen components; and some of his most popular ramen variations. Written with equal parts candor, humor, gratitude, and irreverence, Ivan Ramen is the only English-language book that offers a look inside the cultish world of ramen making in Japan. It will inspire you to forge your own path, give you insight into Japanese culture, and leave you with a deep appreciation for what goes into a seemingly simple bowl of noodles.

This is an autobiography—and a cookbook, of sorts. More than that, it’s a journey of the making of an American ramen chef and an education into what constitutes a deceptively simple bowl of noodles in soup. Long Island–born Orkin traces his obsession with all things Japanese to his teens and college years, majoring in the language and its culture at the University of Colorado. After years of working unloved jobs and traveling to and from Asia, Orkin changed his life by attending the Culinary Institute of America and eventually secured stints at Lutèce and Restaurant Associates and opened a ramen shop in Tokyo. Thanks to his discovery by such celebrities as Ohsaki-San (Japan’s acknowledged ramen expert and manufacturer Sapporo Ichiban, among other good-luck encounters, Orkin established a following. Back in Manhattan, he now offers this book instructing readers in the ramen-making process: half-dozen-plus components fabricated from ingredients, all photographed and meticulously detailed in more than 30 recipes. Perhaps the tasks may be too complex, but by the end, all readers will gain an appreciation of the intricacies of ramen. --Barbara Jacobs

A culinary turning point in my life.
By Borderbumble
I think that those who rated this book on the low side really didn't understand what it was all about.

Having had ramen-ya's in Osaka, I can understand the fanaticism surrounding this noodle. There is so much more to ramen than the instant packages you can get 10 for whatever...

For all home chefs, you remember the day you had your "AHA!" moment. I did with this cook book. His friend's comment on why no one was about to impart to Ivan the secrets of making ramen is that they only knew what they were taught and never actually THOUGHT about what made that bowl special or even contemplated on making something based on personal desire and taste.

I've always wanted to make ramen from scratch. And this book REALLY had me THINKING about what I really was contemplating on doing. Making my OWN signature bowl with the things I really LOVE about ramen all in one spot.

My whole outlook on home cuisine has changed dramatically.

I've been a biochemist for most of my adult life, only switching my focus on completely new pathways in the last five years. It's time to break out my bench notebook and start working on a new and exciting project, one I'll be working on for the rest of my unusual life.

Life is uncertain, as Ivan pointed out. Having been through some bad earthquakes myself and helping my friends dig their homes out after the Kobe Earthquake, well, a bowl of ramen really was more than a bowl of ramen back then. It's life-affirming.

So I really did get it. A lot more than I had anticipated, so I feel this book was worth every single cent and then some.

PS: Planning to host a Ivan Ramen Night. Will be parceling out each component out to fellow foodie friends, and for one night only, we'll assemble the whole shebang, and ACTUALLY be able to spend time eating and laughing rather than frantically rushing about the kitchen trying to get everything out... I'll let you know how it goes!

Okay, we all decided to make our yearly New Year's Eve party something to really remember. Tonight was our Ivan Ramen Night!!! Man, I would want to do this at least monthly! It was really great with the least painful way to put together this great bowl of noodles. I took photos. Won't be able to put them here like I would like it, because I go crazy on layout and photos. Can't do it here at Amazon... let's get back to the subject at hand.

Took us less than an hour before we started serving yummy ramen. I also had made some black garlic oil if you wanted it in your bowl. I have had it this way, and I loved it!! The noodles were stunning -- and I made these all by myself! So now I can do this as often as I want. And I do like making homemade pasta. It soaks up the flavors wonderfully. I was amazed on how great the broth was. I definitely want to make my own magick fish dust. I could use this in many recipes I make. The problem is that this is an expensive ingredient. But it is cool to have a grating box exactly like Iron Chef Morimoto.

I highly recommend that if you want to do "the ramen", parcel out the job to fellow foodies. Now that I know what this all tastes like, I can replicate this all by myself easily. It won't assemble itself. I'll give myself at least a week.

My only change? I love the pork in this recipe. It would cause a HUGE imbalance, but I'd rather have 2-3 slices. And I LOVE hard-boiled eggs. At least 2 here.

We decided to do something very different. It's like Evening at the Improv as we each described how we made in the most humorous way possible. I'm glad I digitaped this. It was hysterical!

So it's almost 23:00. We're all fat and sassy with too much ramen. However, I know what happens to ramen after you've even a huge bowl of it. You'll want something decadent and deep-fried. So we're having deep-fried cilantro shrimp rolls. I've also thawed out some really great honey-smoked salmon from Peninsula Seafoods. I've turned it into smoked salmon rangoon with a fine dipping chili sauce -- 1 part chili sauce and 1 part plum jelly. Yummy!

I do highly recommend putting together this meal of ramen with friends who love ramen, too.

Skip the David Chang Preface
By M. A. Rupp
I felt compelled to write a review after I saw the one star review from the guy who "should have taken a closer look at the product description." I read this over the weekend after receiving it as a gift. Even though I haven't cooked any recipes, this will undoubtedly will be a great framework on how to make good ramen at home. I love his attention to detail. Temperatures for stock are given to the degree. Everything else is just as precise. Weights are listed (how does one properly measure bonito flakes if not by weight?).

Here's what the book isn't: a Japanese cookbook. It's the author's story of going to Japan as well as his recipe for ramen and a few other recipes for what to do with leftovers from making ramen. That's it.

The only thing I absolutely hated was the preface from David Chang. He basically goes on to berate white Americans for not being able to eat noodles properly and thereby ruining his ramen. The guy sets up shop in NYC and has an incredible reputation as a Chef and doesn't expect to get a bunch of meatheaded, moronic Instagram hipsters that don't know what they are doing?

Living here in Seattle, I can walk into any no name pho joint that is filled with white folks slurping the noodles properly down like Asians. I realize that having David Chang's pompous preface will probably help sell some books, but man he's a dingleberry.

A Ramen Lover's Dream book
By YodaMom
Ramen, so delicious with so many variations. Yes, I am a committed fan of ramen. I search for restaurants serving ramen when I travel. I make my own noodles at home. I work on perfecting the right balance for my broth and seasoning. I am a raman addict. So when I saw this book I did my happy dance and clicked the keys to have it in my hands. I got more than I hoped for when I finished it.
Ivan, is a Jewish White guy from New York. He studied Japanese lit and when graduated thought he should use it so he moved to Japan. Where he met his first wife and started to discover his destiny. He feel in love with Japan, the people, and the food. They moved back to NY for a while where they had a child. Tragedy struck and his life went into a
spin. He ended up picking up and moving back to Japan where he floundered and slowly rebuilt his life. He also ate a lot of ramen. This quest for the perfect bowl was fascinating to read. His story is important to the bowl he places in front of his customer.
The history of every ingredient, every step has value. His interaction with other great chefs and retailers, it all builds the flavor. This is a book where the history of the soup is impotent to understand to respect the final product. I loved it, his story was never uninteresting.
The recipes while time consuming have been directed in a way to simplify the process with timing. I have included many of his steps into my homestyle bowl and plan of using them all soon. What I love about his recipes is that he pushes you to be creative, make it yours. There is one to die for dessert, Lemon Sorbet. Totally drool worthy according to everyone in my home that has eaten it.
