A good overview of the new Oracle 12c features - something you should have in your library

Alert - I am a very senior Oracle "systems" DBA. I am not a developer or an App DBA. So I read and reviewed this book as a systems DBA (install, upgrade, migrate, OS tune, DB tune, I/O tune, B/R, DR) point of view.

It covers the features Oracle wanted you to hear about and some you did not. It is well-written, but its coverage of Pluggable Databases (PDBs) and Container Database (CDB) is light for my taste, along with the coverage of the performance-related changes. PDBs and CDBs AKA "multi-tennant database architecture" is a big topic and could fill a large book on its own. Most will consider PDB/CDB "the reason to go to 12c", so you should get more info from Oracle and non-Oracle sources before you plan your real PROD upgrade.

Other topics include Flex Clusters, Flex ASM, RMAN's ability to recover a table, Data Guard's ability to use a stripped down instance as a "repeater", and SQL's new Identify Column and Invisible Column. Also new features in PL/SQL, BI, DW, and Security. The big news in Manageability is the replacement of "DB Control" with the new "DB Express" which is less powerful, especially re: RAC, but has a smaller resource footprint. (*NOTE* if you do not now use Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Cloud Control - you need to do that ASAP)

I liked the book and recommend it be in your library of 12c books. I especially liked page 55 that had a nice lifetime support date diagram, giving you a big-picture glance at the road on Oracle releases, versions, and overlap . For those DBAs who do upgrades a lot, it reminds us all how many times we have done this complicated task in the past - and when.

Must read for all Oracle DBAs

Absolutely a MUST READ for anyone that wants to understand the new features of Oracle 12c. The sections about partitioning and data warehousing were invaluable. The authors do a great job breaking down complicated concepts and flesh it out with examples. I was able to take what was discussed in the book and apply it at my job right away. Thank you Robert, Scott and Eric for making my life easier.

All of Leonard Cohen is worth reading.

This book is what made me love poetry when I was a young teen. I reread it and still see how Mr. Cohen would have caused this. He is truly a master.

It could have been Cohen's best

Some of the poems are way too obscure, but some other parts are really good. The long "Ballet Drama in One Act" doesn't fit with the rest, while the nazi obsession in Cohen's jewish identity is the emotional core of a more complex collection of poems. It could have been Cohen's best, but it seems to me kind of unaccomplished.

Early poetry and prose

This volume contains 95 poems and prose pieces by the great Canadian author and musician. The Project, The True Desire, The Commentary, Kerensky and The New Leader are prose pieces, whilst The New Step is called a Ballet Drama in One Act. Its four characters are Mary, Diane, Harry and The Collector.

The selection opens with What I'm Doing Here and contains moving poems like, among others, The Hearth, No Partners, Finally I Called, My Teacher Is Dying, Montreal 1964, For Marianne, Hydra 1960, Waiting For Marianne, The Glass Dog, Propaganda, How The Winter Gets In, Island Bulletin, Winter Bulletin, Governments Make Me Lonely, The Music Crept By Us, Lot, The Big World, Streetcars and Another Night With Telescope.

The poem The Only Tourist In Havana Turns His Thoughts Homeward (1961) reminds me of his song Stories of the Street on the album Songs of Leonard Cohen that also deals with a visit to Havana. Both it and Death Of A Leader were written in Havana in April 1961. Queen Victoria And Me appears on the album Live Songs as just Queen Victoria. Some of the poems also appear in the book Poems 1956-68 that was first published in 1969. There are 3 illustrations by the author, titled My Personal Fire, Animals In Love and Fires In Every Window.

The front cover drawing of flowers emerging from stone is by Martin Vaughn-James and the photograph of Cohen on the back is by Sophie Baker. The only drawback is that there is no index of first lines. I highly recommend this book to all fans of Leonard Cohen and those who love 1960s poetry.

W. Roy Schulte Vice President and Distinguished Analyst at Gartner Inc. He was the lead author of the 1996 Gartner report that introduced the term SOA. Mr. Schulte originated the research in the field of message brokers, coined the term business activity monitoring (BAM), and wrote the first analyst reports on the zero-latency enterprise and the enterprise service bus (ESB). Mr. Schulte is a member of the Event Processing Technical Society steering committee.

A Thorough Presentation of the Benefits of Event Processing

Much of my work involves integration of mainframe and web applications, and I originally chose this book to get an overview of the advantages that Event Processing might provide for sharing information across diverse platforms. While it has proven to be a comprehensive guide to Event Processing, the primary benefit I've gained from it so far has been a completely unexpected breakthrough in the redesign of a large legacy COBOL system. Our past attempts to modernize this system employed standard SOA techniques, breaking the functions into separate modules but leaving the data flow basically unchanged. It was this book which helped us to realize that it was not just the monlolithic nature of the programs that made this system cumbersome, but also the tight coupling and interdependence of the functions, even in modular form. By employing the Event Processing Network concept, we redefined the pieces of our cycle as complex events, with both synchronous and asynchronous aspects to the processing. The resulting design promises sufficient benefits in both maintenance and daily operation to justify the rewrite. The book also aided in getting approval for the system renovation, by helping some of the non-IT managers to better understand the business advantages inherent in the new design.

While much of the material presented in this book is common sense after you've read it, it helps to see it laid out clearly and explained in a way that everyone can understand. In our case, the thorough coverage pointed out an application of Event Processing that we had completely overlooked.

"Must Read" for any modern IT professional

For the longest time, Prof. Luckham's "Power of Events" was the only book available written by a well known professor in the field. Much has happened since 2002 in this field, and now Prof. Chandy has released this much updated volume with the help of Mr. Schulte from the Gartner Group. This collaboration, which blends the academic view with that of an analyst gives this book a very down to earth flavor - practical applications temper theoretical considerations. This is NOT a nuts-and-bolts book on how to program for Event Processing; however, this book admirably achieves its goal of educating any level of IT professional or manager about Events, Event Streams, Complex Event Processing and Event Driven Architectures (all buzz words that get thrown around in this industry). You will come away with a solid understanding of what these terms mean, and why they are important to you. Practical applications range from simple RFID based location, to Fraud Detection to solving world-wide shortages, as this book shows. It's a fairly quick read for the busy IT manager, and well worth the while.

Good Explanation of Events but Lacks Information on Software Products and Languages

This book is an overview, covering basic principles, vocabulary and best practices for application design. Pros: it's a good way to get started and a nice description of Event Processing (EP), Complex Event Processing (CEP) and how EP systems are designed. It explains how EP helps a business and positions EP with respect to other aspects of IT such as BPM, Rules Engines, SOA and Business Intelligence. Cons: It does not cover the commercial software products - there is nothing here about specific vendors and products. Also, it does not compare and contrast event processing languages - it gives a couple of language examples but not enough to tell me which language to use for a particular application. Overall, I'd recommend this book to someone who wants to understand what events are and how event processing systems work. However, a hands-on software developer will have to find detailed information on implementation elsewhere.

About the Author
My spiritual journey began over 27 years ago, due to my great grandparents and grandparents from both sides of my family. I was introduced to Espiritismo, and this is how my journey into various spiritual paths began. As a child I saw spirits and paranormal activities. These experiences caught my attention. I wanted to learn more and continue exploring these paths. I am passionate about teaching these spiritual truths. As an initiated priest, I feel is my job keep these traditions alive. I am Omo Oshun and Oriate Olu Osain in the Lukumi/Yoruba tradition. First off, I was first baptized in Espiritismo, Sanse, 21 Division, and then received Santo Lavao. Afterwards I was initiated in to the Palo Mayombe tradition and was crowned in Osha. I later received Osain and the ceremony of Irete Kutan. In this ceremony you receive Igba Osha which gives you the title and rank of Oriate, which is the highest rank within the Olorishas. Alafia, Ashe & Nsala Malecum ~Tata Oriate

Very good basic overview of Palo Mayombe

Very good basic overview of Palo Mayombe. I would definitely recommend it to the non initiated in this tradition as well as those who are initiated and are looking for more knowledge. If you are looking for secrets or a deep philosophical explanation of Palo Mayombe this is not the book for you.

Start in lead guitar

This short booklet contains the transcription of the exercises from the Beginning Rock Lead Guitar DVD. It covers basic techniques (hammer-on & pull-off, bend, slide, finger vibrato, palm mute, artificial harmonics, alternate picking and more), scales (minor & major pentatonic, blues and dorian), key changes and blending modalities.
It's worthy as a complement for the DVD, but if you're looking for a book with much more information on lead guitar, better try Metal Lead Guitar Primeror Metal Lead Guitar/Book and Cd (Vol. 1) although you aren't interesting in metal but in other rock styles.
