Better than Haynes
By The Linux Colonel
I'll only buy Chilton's manuals after the last dozen Haynes manuals I've owned all skip the things you're actually using the manual to learn about. It's like hey, jack the wheels up off the ground and proceed to replace the transmission, then put back on the lug nuts, tightening to 100ft-lbs. I mean where are all the steps in between???? Why did I get a book? At least Chilton's puts a few steps in between. They could still be much more thorough, as I've always had to look things up online even using Chilton's manuals. Maybe I should pull out the camera and write my own manuals when I work on things. Then at least I wouldn't be starting with brand new parts to replace brand new parts that aren't even worn, which is nothing like working on a vehicle that has actually been driven for a number of years.

Ford Escape- repair manuals
By partshound
I have the Ford service manual that the machanics at Ford use - but as far as I am concerned both the Haynes and the Chilton manuals are more useful to the average "shade-tree" home machanic- For example the Ford manual does not even give the firing order nore the electrical systems diagrams but the Haynes and Chilton manuals do. The Ford machanics have many other sources of information so this is no problem for them. Both Haynes and Chilton are written buy the same author so it's your choice.

From School Library Journal
The editors of Domino magazine here show how amateurs can achieve a young, sophisticated look in their homes. A brief review of important preliminary considerations—budget, defining one's own style, the room's function—is followed by advice for decorating every room of the house, including children's rooms and offices. Different styles are shown for each in plenty of color photographs, with suggested furnishings and advice on how to mix styles. Each chapter concludes with a look at how a Domino staff member has decorated a similar room with a description of her approach to design. Recommended for large public libraries.

well, it IS what you love about Domino...but nothing new
By Georgia C.
I am a major Domino fan. I have been reading it for two years, living vicariously through its profiles of well-heeled decorators and clients, and the resulting photo shoots. I never used to read decorating magazines because I found them a little stuffy or hilarious, but Domino strikes the right balance between whimsy and realistic. So the book - 4 stars. Why not 5 stars for a 10 star magazine?

The book is, well, a rehash of Domino photos for the past few years. The book is a roundup of decorating elements that have appeared in the magazine - patterns, objects, furniture, objets d'art - and they are presented in a format similar to the Lucky Magazine book on fashion. (Both magazines are published by same company.) The book is high on pictures but low on practical advice. You see pictures, a summary of key elements (as in shapes of furniture, a few keywords about the style). There is some information on how to go about the process of DIY decorating or the professional route, but I really missed the details on where to buy what you saw in a picture, or the personal commentary from people who participated in the decorating that makes the actual magazine so great. I think a major element of Domino's success was to hear how living in a room felt like, and these rooms were beloved because they were very habitable, not at all untouchable or filled with dangerous-looking items (Kelly Wearstler, I'm looking at you). But here you just get the end result, without the process, which is what decorating and creativity are all about.

I would recommend this to people who have NOT ever read Domino, or who don't have the patience for it and would prefer to just look at pictures for ideas on how to fix a room, or to get a sense of what they do like. Faithful Domino subscribers (and the book does include a subscription) might prefer to stick with the back issues. I wish I hadn't been forced to throw mine away due to a move to a smaller place, so this book is a nice resource, but it does not measure up to the real thing.

Some pluses, however, since I would like to end on a positive note for a magazine I've really adored:
- great section on small spaces and how to deal, particularly for renters
- how to put together a not-embarrassing kid's room (!)
- love the hand-drawn illustrations (not found in the real magazine)

Ideally, I'd give it a 3.5/5.

Not for everyone
By mreece
After hearing such rave reviews for this book, I eagerly waited for it's arrival and gobbled it up the moment I held it in my hand. Unfortunately, I was left with much disappointment. There are some good points for newbie decorators like myself - how to find your sense of style, how to go about decorating a room from scratch, etc - but this is within the first 20-something pages of the book and information that you'll likely find displayed on many design blogs. I also liked that in each section, the authors give an overview of different furniture styles, pros and cons, and what they would match well with. But other than that, you can tell that this book was written for a certain crowd and not the average household. Most of the design examples are in lofts with tall ceilings and seemingly endless space and not in a traditional space ie: moderately sized rectangular rooms with doors and windows to consider. There are some small-space examples but the authors seemed to forget an equally important space size - medium! Homes are not either big or small; some are moderate and I really wished that the book had more examples of that size, along with more traditional floor plans. The floor plans would have been extremely helpful if I had a loft, an oddly shaped room, or something that looks to be a 30x20 ft room.

Outside of the sizing issue, I think that the design elements of the book are for 20-something art decorators with small or no children and their friends. Most of the examples seem either really cluttered or completely spartan but of course, most of the photos only show a small part of the room and you have to take the author's word that the other half of the space blends seamlessly with the small section that we see. I do like some of the suggestions given but I feel like the examples didn't convey it properly for me - nothing wrong with Domino on that part; it's just my personal taste.

I don't know what exactly to call Domino's style since it seems to be just random stuff thrown together [which I usually like but it didn't work for me in the examples given] but if you're into the loft, art-deco, shabby chic [to the extreme] look then this book would be perfect for you. Otherwise, you may want to look elsewhere.

Brilliant!
By consumerifica
More often that not decorating books are just eye candy; after read them once you are satisfied but done. This is NOT the case with domino's first book. The domino team has managed to create a book that you will keep reading it again and again. It is simply brilliant!

Even though I have kept every issue of domino and go through them regularly, the book's format allows for a deeper approach to domino's mission. They have really worked hard to make the book into a usable tool. With more than just pretty pictures and stories, this book provides a framework for how to think about putting together a room (and yes their is new content).

I am only disappointed in two ways: 1, I wish the book referenced the issue each in which each room originally appeared and/or provided information about the products in each room. Perhaps there was not enough space, but access to information is one of my favorite parts of domino's monthly. 2, They also overlooked closets as room. And lets face it they have featured some stunning closets over the past few years.

Buy this book, you will NOT regret it!!!

The Gamble of the Godless (The Chronicles of Avin Book 1), by Dave Maine

The New York Times calls David Maine 'an original, beguiling writer,' and nowhere is that more evident than in his ongoing original fantasy series the Chronicles of Avin.

In this first installment, Avin del Bors has a problem. His brother Drew has run off to fight in a war against the wolves, even though the wolves weren’t responsible for the vicious attack against the humans on the Free Plains. Avin's companions—the warrior Ax, one-armed sorcerer Jocen, plucky owl Ulkia, drug-addled cheetah Summon the Wind and raccoon stand-up comic Onesso—all have their own reasons for accompanying him through the animal territories across the Bladebone Mountains. Their travels will take them from the highly regimented wolf cities, to the riches and luxury of the Equine Commonwealth, all the way to the vertiginous tunnels of the serpents' underground Net and across the waters of the Autonomous Dolphin Collective—to whatever unknown awaits them.

What neither Avin nor his companions yet understand is that the real force behind the Free Plains attack is neither canine nor feline, nor yet crocodile, insect, raptor, bear or shark. Far to the east, in the scorched wasteland known as The Barrens, lives the ragged clan that calls itself The Godless.

There, Avin will confront his brother, his companions and himself, and discover two truths: one that changes everything he understands about himself, and another that threatens the balance of the entire world.

Dave Maine aka David Maine is the author of The Preservationist (2004), Fallen (2005), The Book of Samson (2006), Monster, 1959 (2008), and An Age of Madness (2012). His novels have been translated into more than numerous languages and sold around the world.

For $2.99 it's hardly a gamble
By C. Barna
I used to be a huge fantasy fan. Tolkien, Goodkind, Eddings etc. Slowly my appetite for it died. Perhaps I was choosing bad books, of perhaps fantasy went through a lull in quality, but I just wasn't doing it for me anymore. There was too much derivative garbage out there. I slowly moved toward literary fiction, and became shy of fantasy.

Then I heard David Maine was writing a fantasy novel. I always give authors that have previously entertained me a chance, regardless of genre (except "romance" please David never!) so long story short, I got an ARC of `Gamble of the Godless'.

From the first chapter I was hooked. The writing is fast and easy. The dialogue is reasonably realistic, and best part, no elves, orcs, giants or dragons to be found! Don't get me wrong, I love myth and folktales, and all the fantastical creatures out there, but the fantasy genre needs a little fresh blood, and here it is.

The book is full of action and adventure. Talking animals and their cultures are abundant. Magic is used in a way that makes sense, with rules and a certain amount of logic. One thing that I found the most interesting is how much humour is present. I found myself laughing often, but it's not funny in a Terry Pratchett way... in other words it's not a farce, or goofy.

The story is simple. It's a fish out of water story, which lends itself well to us, the readers, as we are also fish out of water in this word. The hero is on a quest, so there is a lot of adventurous stuff going on. It is also a bit of a buddy story, and I liked that. It gave the story a touch of humanity that is often missing in fantasy.

I do have one small complaint. I wanted more depth. I found the world David Maine created to be very interesting, and I wanted a little more detail. Not so much as to slow the story down , but a little more. So as far as complaints go, that's not too bad. I wanted more.

Where else can you find a raccoon doing stand up comedy?
By bookblogger
The Gamble of the Godless by David Maine follows the young man Avin as he travels a rather unique world. The races are not defined by skin color or the commonly seen human, dwarf, elf, etc, they are divided by animal species. Each species' language defined by their specific way of viewing life.

When an army is massacred not far from Avin's family farm he meets the lone survivor Ax. Even though Ax would have been his enemy if his army had not been wiped out Avin takes pity on him and gives him food and shelter. Learning that the Canine Kingdom is suspected of the attack Avin and Ax go to find out more from a nearby village. Finding out that the warring kingdoms of the humans are allying to get revenge against the canines they return to the farm with the intent of joining the army. Along the way the realize that not all is as it seems though Avin's brother has run off to join in the killing of the canines. Avin goes to bring his brother home while Ax is motivated by avenging all of his comrades.

In their travels through all the kingdoms they meet many interesting creatures including a human sorceress trained by snakes, a horse spy, a comedian raccoon, a snake sorcerer, an owl, a drug addicted cheetah, and many more animals from the various species.

I had a lot of fun reading this book with it's unique rules for interaction between the races. The cultural differences are much more pronounced than is normally found in fantasy novels which led to some interesting difficulties for the group as they traveled through the various regions. I did find the canines method of speaking to be kind of annoying at times, but the group was not really around them for any great amount of time so that is a minor thing. Avin was a well written young man out seeing the world for the first time. He often had no idea what was going on or how to act/react in the situations they found themselves in, but proved to be a quick learner. Avin also seemed to have a very good heart which inspired loyalty from the various species in the group.

Overall this was a fun read and I am very much looking forward to the next chapter in the story.

Great Book!
By Chris Johnson
The Gamble of the Godless is a fantasy adventure book that follows the travels of Avin del Bors who is a young boy trapped in a warring and confused world. As things begin to heat up Avin's bother heads off to fight in an unprecedented and completely misunderstood war and Avin sets out to prevent the war and protect his brother. Along the way he adds warriors, sorcerers, and creature friends who aid him on his quest throughout the realm. What makes this book so unique? First off the story of a young person travelling around the countryside with a group of diverse people attempting to do something or prevent something else is not a new idea. It has really never been a new idea but David Maine has put something together here that is absolutely a new spin on this idea. The animals that are incorporated into the group speak in different ways and have special abilities in some cases. His characters are unique and while reading it is really easy to lose yourself into the story of each character. The groups adventure through each animal homeland is stunning and exciting; especially the canine world. The interactions between the different races (both human and animal) provides a glimpse into the animal world in a way that has not been done before. This provides for unique difficulties for the group as they travel. The uniqueness of the characters is what really stood out to me. I could not help but love each character and to hope that they would not lose a companion in the end. This is a journey that you take with Avin and his companions. You will laugh, cry, feel pain, laugh a bit more, and be frustrated with them. It is an emotional roller coaster; just like a good fantasy novel should be. You will grow attached to the characters and lose yourself within the story. I really enjoyed this read. If you are fantasy reader then this is a must read for you. I look forward to the next chapter of the story and more epic adventures from David Maine. The Gamble of the Godless is a fantastic book that should rank high within the fantasy world for a long time to come.

An absolutely gripping page turner!
By Amazon Customer
Shatters expectations for this series. This is just brilliant. I could not put it down and stayed up much later then I should have to finish it. One of the most human and realistic stories to come from the Black Library in a while. Gives you an insight into the working of the Imperium from the perspective of real people and not just Space Marines(don't worry, there is amazing action with them as well) and the political intrigue gets more and more interesting, every scene on Terra more compelling.
Rob Sander's has truly created a masterclass story of Orks and Man battling to the bitter end. The descriptions of the swarming Orks are actually scary at times, instead of the idiot humour they usually exhibit. Highly recommended, and a stronger addition to the series than its predecessor.

Top of the Food Chain
By Perry Allen Smith
Continuing the tale of the orks' revenge on humanity, Sanders does a good job of holding up what Abnett laid down.

The first novel, I Am Slaughter, ended by showing a bit of the scope and unending tide of orks being launched at the Imperium. Here we get a far better look as entire worlds aren't just killed, they're destroyed as thoroughly as if the Death Star (of Star Wars fame) had blown them up. The orks themselves are seemingly endless in number, reminding one of how some films show a zombie apocalypse, with relentless waves of the living dead. Here, though, the enemy is very much alive.

In specific, we see a massive battle between a brother-Chapter of Imperial Fists (the Fists Exemplar) as they struggle to hold out against wave after wave of orks on their crashed space fortress. A lot of detail is put into the clash, and if you ever thought an apothecary was more talk than fight, then Brother-Medicae Mendel Reoch will prove you wrong (and teach you to love the chainsword more than the bolter). Sanders also writes the inversion, in which we see a progressively-worsening battle between ordinary humans trying to stop their water-world of Undine from being utterly overrun with orks. Things go from terrible to horrific for them, with entire cities sunk below the waves and when the ranking commander starts on a contingency plan, the reader can only accept that their situation is incapable of getting any worse; they really are royally screwed.

We do of course cover the corrupt politics of the Imperial Palace, and how Grand Master of the Assassins Drakan Vangorich attempts to manipulate matters so that instead of prettying their reputations, the High Lords actually work to stop the ork attacks. Things threaten to get ugly for him, though, as last book indicated, because the Inquisition is trying to handle things themselves, and give him dire warning (being immune to threats, he duly returns them).

Perhaps the biggest moment (for me, at least) was the work done by the Mechanicus. In the aftermath of Ardamantua, they are trying to gather data so they can understand ork gravitational and teleportational technologies, and in the process they make some shocking discoveries. I don't want to give anything away, but I will admit that I was almost too excited to put the book down, and I really needed sleep at that point.

Overall, Rob Sanders really does cement himself once again as a solid writer for Black Library, be it for Space Marines or ordinary mortals (for the latter, his "Redemption Corps" in the Honour Imperialis anthology is definitely worth checking out). He writes hard action and desperate survival against impossible odds, and here he shines, showing the massive threat posed by the ferocious orks.

Highly recommend.

Super Orks still attacking – Episode 2
By JPS
Predator, Prey, is the second novel in the Beast Arises series following “I am Slaughter” from Dan Abnett. The story is the continuation of the first volume which you would do well to read before this one. It is set in the 32nd Millenium, hundreds of years after the end of the Horus Heresy. The Empire has become complacent, bureaucratic and decadent. It is coming under massive attack by what seems to be a new breed of Orks with bases made of whole moons that move across space and attack almost simultaneously multiple planets and laying them to total waste before moving on to the next target. While the threat grows and various very different planets fall and die, the High Lords of Terra keep on with their politicking and power plays and totally underestimate the threat, except or some who decide to take things in their own and very ruthless hands.

As also mentioned by another reviewer, the story has no single focus. Instead, the reader is treated with a collection of chapters tracking events that are happening simultaneously on the various planets under attack and on Terra. The various invasions include a couple of forge worlds being assaulted, a water world undergoing invasion, a desert world defended by an Imperial Fists successor Chapter in their damaged and beleaguered space fortress, a Black Templar Crusading force lead by their Marshall and abandoned by their accompanying Imperial Navy escort and a Mechanicum force which is more interested in studying the enemy and the sources of its strength than in helping anyone, including their own forge worlds under attack.

The author does convey rather well the sense of grim despair of the individual worlds which get overwhelmed one after another by floods of Orks raining down on them through devastating planetary assaults. It also conveys rather superbly the contrast between these unfolding catastrophes and the atmosphere of intrigue, corruption, power fights and rivalries taking place at the same time on Terra.

The characterisation is also interesting. One of the most intriguing is the somewhat idealistic Grand Master of the Assassins Drakan Vangorich and his far-reaching networks, because he seems to be the only power – along with the Space Marines - that is really devoted to the Empire and not driven by self-interest. Also interesting, if perhaps less original, are the oppositions within the ranks of the Mechanicum researchers between those who believe in the fight for Mankind and the Empire, and those who believe in promoting the sole interests of the Mechanicum. A good story worth a solid four stars and hoping the following ones will be just as good, and perhaps also a bit longer than this shortish 250 pages.

Short book with a ton of info.
By Robert J Sears
Author gives a lot of info on the workings of and proper set up of a banjo. Very obvious he has spent a lot of time playing and studying the workings of a banjo. As a builder and repairman I have seen a lot of banjos but I found this book cheap at the price for the info found in it.

Interesting opinions and designs ,but too specific to the author's designs.
By Bruce Harper
Nechville has created many original designs for the banjo, but his tuning/setup advice is best applied to his banjos. I wish the author put more discussion on the banjos which most of us have and less self promotion.

Tom Nechville is a well know banjo builder. I knew his book would be good and informative. It is! One of these days I hope to have one of his unique banjos.

The Definitive Edition of Death Note (cont.)
By Omnizoa
The manga is excellent, no question, however this review is regarding the quality of the book itself.

I've taken parts from my review of the first volume and compared them here (1st Volume review is in quotes "").

"Design:
The Black Editions appear just as they should, they feature a basic cover with a headshot of one of the major characters unique to each book (Light, Ryuk, L, Misa, Mello, and Near in that order), and eschew the original spine design which each featured a different shinigami that most often did not play a role in the story (exceptions being 1 Ryuk, 4 Gelus, 5 Rem, and 9 Sidoh). The books are stripped of their extraneous content including ads, Shonen Jump subscription cards, "Last Time on Death Note...", and "In The Next Volume..." pages leaving only Death Note to keep your attention. The overall design is nothing but appropriately ominous leaving sparce white text on a black field reminicent of the Death Notes themselves, even the edges of the pages are black, easily setting the books apart from anything else on your shelf."

The second volume breaks the no-ads mold by squeezing in a much unneeded page advertising the 12-volume boxset and dvd collection. Beyond that the design is unchanged.

"Content:
The primary feature is that the Black Editions serve as two-packs, each of the 6 containing two of the original 12 books of content. The books are also about 1 inch taller and 3/4ths of an inch deeper, this means the original pages are printed larger and in higher quality. The opening pages that were inked in color for Shonen Jump are back in color now, having been grayscaled in the original release. A couple art pages have been added, however these come at the cost of the original books' front cover art which do not make reappearances, even as art pages. The art on the original back covers do make reappearances, having always been art pages to bookend each chapter, however these are not in color."

My complaint about the missing cover art is addressed in the second volume where at the end of the book, it features the original first four cover images. I'm glad to see the cover art again, though I do wish it was in color, but mostly I'm puzzled by the approach. Why not just have one page in every black edition showing off both covers of the books it contains? I would never have decided to release the cover art in batches of four every other volume, that doesn't make any friggen' sense.

"Material:
The higher quality paper is nothing to write home about as the difference is slight, however it's worth noting that the quality is significantly better than some similar rereleases such as Naruto's 3-in-1 omnbuses which cram 3 books together with very thin paper. The biggest drawback to this rerelease is surely it's cover material. The covers feature the same matte finish that appeared on the original books (unlike the glossy covers on Naruto) and consequently fingerprints and nail scratches are much more visible, especially considering the covers predominantly black. In addition to this, it's obvious that the inking process that was used to render the edges of the pages black was done with the cover on. Because of this, ink stains are visible all along the outer edges of the front and back cover. These may not be immediately noticeable at a glance, but if there is a silver lining to this, it's that the books should handle age very well. The page edges will not appear to yellow under a layer of black ink and inevitable damage to the cover will blend in with the ink stains. If the end result is a great book that resembles a battered old tome, the venture will have been a success. Ultimately however, the choice to ink the page edges was poor. It looks more like a block than a Death Note, and it would qualify no less for the title of "Black Edition" without it."

Surely my biggest dissapointment came here. I've gone to see some of the Black Edition copies as sold on shelves and noticed that many of them didn't have the bothersome ink stains on them. When I received my copy through Amazon however, I realized it was worse than before. Instead of a thin streak of ink along the edges of the book, both the front and back had 2-3 thumb-size smears across them. I have no idea what went through the manufacturer's head when they decided to pull this crap, but suffice it to say, in the light, your book might not look so new.

I'm tempted to score this lower due to the inconsistent damage appearing on these books, but the new art, returning cover art, and general quality of the book's content dissuades me. My only wish is that they made all of these books cleanly and without obvious printing errors. Beyond that...

Judgment:
All things considered, the Black Editions present a streamlined and convenient re-packaging of the original books, and lose little in the process. I would have liked to see the original cover art and the all of the originally colored art pages return in full color, but the larger pages and two-in-one format are more than fair compensation. The ink inconsistent damage is a definite sticking point, but it certainly warrants the unqiue title of "Black Edition" and if nothing else will certainly provoke more than one "What are you reading?" questions, to which you will always have a good answer.

Death Note Continues To Deliver!
By Joseph Born
For those of you who didn't read Death Note Black Edition, Vol. 1 , Death Note follows the life of Light Yagami after he finds a "Death Note", which enables him to kill anyone, anytime, anywhere, anyhow... under two conditions. First he must know their name (Their real one) and know what their face looks like. And a Shinigami (Japanese God of Death) named Ryuk, who dropped the Death Note into the "Earth world" follows Light everywhere since it's his Death Note.
In the previous volume, Light decided to use the Death Note to kill of the worlds top criminals along and many of Japan's criminals, even the minor ones. He does this by giving them a heart attack. This earns him the attention of L, a super slueth detective who can solve any case. L puts together a Task Force, which includes Light's father, coincidentally a top cop in the NPA. This task force has pledged to bring "Kira" to justice.
In this volume, L and Light come face to face! Although neither one knows who the other one really is at first. This leads to an astonishingly fun war of words between the two. Of course this war is interrupted as L and Light discover that someone they both know has suffered a heart attack... Then a Kira holds a news station hostage by the most unconventional means unless they air threatening tapes about "Kira's" plans for the world. It turns out this is the work of a second Kira named Misa, who has the Shinigami eyes. Light joins the task force to help track down this apparent second Kira which leads to Light and L playing a game of Cat and Mouse with the killer.
The art in this book is great. The artist really knows his facial expressions. The dialogue is absolute genius. The best thing about this is that it's oversized. Overall, I cannot recommend this volume enough! That is if you've read the first one.

A visually stuninng version
By Clay R. Haase
Death Note is without a doubt one of those mangas that practically everyone has at least heard about. No wonder too, the story is interesting and attention-catching. The plot is centered on Light Yagami, who finds a notebook with which he can kill people by writing their names on it, and the police investigation that attempts to put an end to his criminal killing and bring him to justice. It is deep, interesting, with a well-developed plot, and absolutely memorable. This manga is, story-wise and art-wise, fantastic. There is no question about it, and a review based purely on the story would be pointless considering the sheer amount of great existing ones already. I definitely recommend a fan of manga or just purely great works to read this comic. Because of this, this review will be about the quality of the Black Edition book itself and how it compares to the physical tomes. I will note here that I have both the hardback and paperback editions of the black edition, as well as some older volumes of the normal version of the comic.

The design of the Black Editions is just as they should, and feature a basic cover with a headshot of each of the major characters (Light, Ryuk, L, Misa, Mello, and Near). The spine, unlike the normal volumes, doesn’t feature a different shinigami in each volume, but a simpler and neater and simpler design. It seems, in a visual way, to be more reminiscent in this sense of the Death Note itself: formal, elegant, and with a somewhat ominous tone that goes along with the story itself. This extends to the visual look of the pages of the book, which from the outside are completely black.

The main feature of the Black Edition is that in each volume it serves as a two-pack, and in the six published volumes it contains the original 12 books of contents. The books are taller and wider, and the art in the pages is in this way scaled along with the pages – thus becoming easier to appreciate the detail of the art and the text itself – and makes it easier to hold than the original volumes. Several art pages are added at the cost of the original covers of the original volumes featuring the characters (though these do make reappearances at the end of the chapters, but not in colour).

The difference of material with the original releases is slight, though when compared to rereleases of other similar series (such as the Naruto 3-in-1 volumes) it is noteworthy that the Death Note Black Edition isn’t use as much thin paper. The paperback version, due to its choice of material in the cover – which although I like has a very significant visual impact – appears more as a block of sorts, making me prefer the hardback edition of these volumes because of their visual impact (though this is a conclusion I often get when comparing hardback and paperback editions of different books).

All things considered, the Death Note black edition is a great streamlined and convenient package of the original volumes. The increased size makes for an easier reading experience, and no matter what version (paperback or hardback) it looks visually stunning. The coloured art in some pages look great, as do the other black and white areas of the volume because of the increased quality. Though absence of the cover art of the original volumes was missed, I definitely recommend purchasing these volumes for reading or collecting. They look wonderful and will make for a great addition to any library, plus are easier to hold and read than the original release. As such I give it 4 out of 5 stars as applied to the volumes and materials themselves, rather than the story. The story, though not one of my absolute favourites, is definitely worth reading and deserves the highest rating.
