The Ancients Still Get It On

"When it comes to the topic of sex, the combination of illicit thrills, prurient fascination, and a desire for the personal and the private means that critical faculties get all too often thrown out the window and we find ourselves unable to resist a juicy story, no matter how improbably." Thus writes Alastair J. L. Blanshard, who has maintained his critical faculties sufficiently to bring out an unlikely sex book about the role that sex played in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, and what we have been making of those Greeks and Romans ever since. _Sex: Vice and Love from Antiquity to Modernity_ (Wiley - Blackwell) is fun because of all the juicy stories, and Blanshard, a senior lecturer in Classics & Ancient History at the University of Sydney, has latched onto a topic that those who have otherwise no interest in classical history might find themselves enjoying. One of his themes here is that for their own purposes, people have changed and misinterpreted the legends about ancient sexuality, and his book is an engaging corrective.

For instance, Blanshard sets out to examine why it is that there is such a strong certainty that those ancient Romans were up to such a high degree of naughtiness. He says that "even the most cursory survey of catalogs of pornographic film titles will reveal no end of classically-themed erotica," and his own cursory survey includes _Serenity's Roman Orgy_ (2001) and _Caligula and His Boys_ (2003). (Blanshard's book is probably the only one I have read that jumbles references to porn titles on one hand and Suetonius, Aristotle, and so on, on the other.) Blanshard's chapter on orgies is an eye-opener. Everyone knows how those Romans had orgies complete with grapes, and everyone is just wrong. There is scant evidence that there was ever such a thing. "The Romans never routinely engaged in sexual orgies and would have been appalled that we thought that they did." Any references to orgies indicate one-off affairs rather than patterns of behavior. It is amusing that Blanshard gives an example of how Marcus Minucius Felix in the third century AD shows how the pagans described orgy activities of those demented Christians. When it came time for the Christians to take their revenge on the pagans, accusing them of orgies was just the thing, a concupiscent way of getting revenge and telling naughty stories, too. The other main theme in Blanshard's book is the difficulty of understanding homosexuality by trying to look at "Greek Love." The Greeks did have a tradition of discoursing about male - male relationships that would make such relationships seem a marker of Greek culture, but Blanshard says, "The notion that homosexuality was in some senses intrinsically Hellenic would have come as a surprise to the Greeks." Greek love was a cultural manifestation that we have difficulty in understanding, and can be interpreted in many ways. Blanshard traces its historical interpretations. There wasn't much made of it in medieval times because people were busy talking about the horrors of sodomy, and that so settled the question that it silenced any other discussion of male - male sexual relations. Blanshard traces how Plato's teachings about Greek love were rediscovered in the Renaissance, with a vital discussion between two particular intellectuals highlighting them and bringing Plato's other writings to the fore. The vehemence of the discussion is amazing, with one side seeing Plato as the source of all Christian heresies. In the Enlightenment, a stock figure for satire was the humanist teacher who uses instruction in the classics as a cover for seducing students, with pornographic novels showing masters giving hands-on instruction to demonstrate the Latin words for "underneath," "backwards," and so on. Blanshard includes an account of Sapphic love, and the use of ideas about Sappho (about whom there is almost nothing known for certain) to denigrate Marie Antoinette, an example of male anxiety being assuaged by derogation.

Blanshard has given a broad picture of ideas of sexuality in the ancient world, but also a history of how those ideas have affected us even to the present; his epilogue has two professors arguing about Plato in a Colorado courtroom in 1993. Blanshard's book is obviously the production of an academic, but the heavily-referenced pages offer surprise, not stuffiness. In a box about Ganymede, Blanshard explains that you can find a modern porn version of the erotic encounters of that desirable youth with Zeus, Hermes, Ares, and Apollo, with illustrations that "suggest that Ares would not have looked out of place in a San Francisco leather bar." Another box has an extended evaluation of the 1979 film _Caligula_, Penthouse's $17 million entry into art porn, about which Blanshard sniffs, "There is a problem in equating ancient Rome with nothing but sex." There was more than sex going on in the ancient world, but the sex that was there, and the ideas about it, Blanshard shows, are still on our minds a couple of millennia later.

About the Author
Matt Ritter studies cultivated trees and trees that escape cultivation.He has a bachelor's degree in microbiology and a Ph.D. in plant development biology. He is currently a botany professor in the biological sciences department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and director of the plant conservatory there. He has authored numerous scientific papers about plants and contributed to botanical references including the upcoming second edition of the Jepson Manual: Higher Plants of California and the Flora of North America Project. He holds a Kenan Fellowship at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens, is the Ray Collett Visiting Scholar at the UC Santa Cruz arboretum, teaches for the Organization of Tropical Studies in Costa Rica, and is the chair of the City of San Luis Obispo Tree Committee.

Handy guide to California street trees

In the three weeks that I've owned this book, I've been able to identify dozens of trees in my neighborhood -- brush cherry and holly oak in my complex, Brisbane box in the supermarket parking lot, Bradley pear at the post office. Although by no means comprehensive, A Californian's Guide to the Trees Among Us is a huge improvement over my previous tree identification strategy (scrolling through pages of image search results for 'tree with bright pink berries').

Assuming you live in California and have an interest in trees, this is a great starter field guide that not only profiles lots of common street trees (over 150 of them), but also provides the basics on how to look at trees and talk about them. There's an non-illustrated identification key in the beginning, but the book (divided into gymnosperms, angiosperms, and palms) is mostly composed of full color tree profiles, arranged by Latin name. (If you're new to trees, you may end up flipping around a lot at first.) Each profile contains full color photographs of the tree and its most distinctive features -- e.g. the leaves, bark, flowers, or seeds. Unlike most field guides, Ritter's text offers plenty of interesting, eclectic factoids about each tree. If you're a nerd, you might find Trees Among Us to be a fun read in its own right. I definitely did. Check out the profile on dogwood for Ritter's most droll entry.

A few usability quibbles: in focusing on just the most distinctive features of each tree, Ritter doesn't always include a close-up of the leaves, which can be annoying especially if the features he does include (like flowers or fruit) don't happen to be on the tree at the moment. There were a few times I thought he should have included more photos (such as the highly distinctive bark of the strawberry tree) or different ones (the crape myrtle in bloom rather than with just leaves). Finally, the index, which is a good place to go if you can't remember the Latin name of a tree, often lists a tree under several different pages without indicating which is the main profile. Start flipping.

These are minor drawbacks to what is overall a very user friendly, accessible, and nicely organized field guide that will have you eyeing your neighborhood trees with new appreciation. At about 150 pages, Trees Among Us is just small enough to be portable in a book bag or large purse. There's even a ruler printed on the back of the book for measuring leaves, pods, or other tree parts. I'm grateful to Matt Ritter for reminding me that nature really is everywhere, even in boring suburban California. If you're not in California, you might be more interested in Arthur Plotnik's The Urban Tree Book: An Uncommon Field Guide for City and Town.

Love this book

This is a tree lovers book. What a pleasure it is to be able to identify a beautiful tree, and learn a bit about its origins and habits.
I've become a tree watcher as others are bird watchers.

This is the book I return to over and over again to help me identify the trees in California.
From this book I've learned how to look at trees carefully and to note the type of leaf, bark, and flower that can than lead to a confident tree identification. Armed with the name of the tree, it is easy to move on to other guides or internet searches to find more in depth information, if needed.

Ritter includes lists of the most commonly cultivated California native and urban trees.
Also included are keys to identification by group. For example Group 7 is trees with simple, opposite, or whorled leaves. This is a great way to begin the identification process.

I've especially appreciated the pronunciation guide for the Latin names, the histories, the short quotes about trees, along with the photos of trees, leaves, flowers and seeds. Now I'm able to name the Cassia leptophylla (Golden Medallion Tree) that I've admired, differentiate between the palms,maples and eucalyptus---and sound like I know something!

Underwhelming but useful

As my headline states: this book was underwhelming but useful. I volunteer for an environmental organization that plants trees all over Los Angeles in urban, suburban, and wild land. As such, I often get questions about what kinds of trees grow here. When the author did a workshop at a local community festival I thought this would be a great resource to help me make sure I'm giving the most accurate information possible. While this book is quite useful in identifying different species of trees (high marks for that), if you want more in-depth information on particular species this is not the resource for you. It is merely a field guild first and foremost for identification.

If you're looking for ideas on what to plant in your yard I would not recommend this book. The author does not keep his writing unbiased and even goes so far as to praise eucalyptus which have proven to be one of the most destructive invasive species in California. To the unknowing reader, trees such as eucalyptus and ficus are presented, by this book, as aesthetically pleasing and gems of the urban forest, but there is little focus on the hazardous nature of these plants and why they shouldn't be planted here in the first place (uplifting sidewalks, digging into water manes, fire hazard, disease prone, weedy, etc).

It would have been nice to have alternatives mentioned and not just to counter the invasive exotics but also new species of trees that aren't widely cultivated in CA but could be useful here without being invasive. For example, what species could we introduce that are more fire, drought, and flood resistant, have beautiful rare foliage, or would grow better in the elements of the city landscape (confinement, heat, pollution)? The author offers a great pie chart in the first chapter which displays the diversity of tree species planted in CA from different parts of the world. Australia, not surprisingly, is the number one source. Since this book only focuses on the most widely planted trees in CA, it offers little recommendation for improvements in our cultivation of tree species to improve the health of California's urban forests and thus our cities. As such, most of this book features Australian trees, then South East Asia, and so on. Native CA plants get the slimmest glimpse in this book.

Good if you only want a field guide for identification. Not good if you want detailed information about individual species or alternative species that would also do well in our west coast marine climate.

Story of a girl who never wanted to marry but still happily became "The Malhotra Bride"!

Sunita is just twenty and bubbling with excitement to start her dream life of a career woman where she is free and self independent. But her parents have different ideas. They want her married as soon as possible. Her father her even set his eyes on a most suitable match for her. The only son of the illustrious Malhotra family, who own the Malhotra garments, Akshay is his choice. Despite Sunita's objections, a date is set for the two families to meet and Sunita is told to be ready.

What will Sunita do?

She doesnt want to get married so soon. She wants to be someone. Stand on her own feet. But this is not the trend in her house. Gokul Rishi, her father, "was a very strict father and strongly believed that women should be occasionally seen and never heard." Ever since her childhood, Sunita had to fight for every single thing in her life and her ally in all these conquests was her grandfather. This time, however, even her grandfather is helpless and she is on her own.

Akshay on the other hand is also against an arranged marriage and feels that his current life of "work hard and play harder" is working quite well without the added stress of marriage. A billionaire with killer looks, girls have always been abundant but still he agrees to meet the girl and see for himself.

What happens when these two very different people meet is the story behind The Malhotra Bride.
Will sparks fly or will there be a disastrous fire?
How will Sunita rid herself of Akshay and follow her life as she wishes?

A clean and sweet love story of a girl who wants to be free to live her life as she wishes but is forced to conform to age old traditions is very beautifully and interestingly narrated by Sundari in her new book, The Malhotra Bride.

The characterization is expertly done and each character plays its part to perfection. Sunita is headstrong as well as innocent in many ways. She craves the love of her parents and often does things she doesn't agree to just to please them. Her parents, Gokul and Leela are as conservative as they come. Gokul is strict and often behaves like he is superior to his wife and daughters just because he is a man. Leela has adapted her life as per her husband's wishes and does anything in her power to comply to him even when she doesn't agree to his actions. Sandhya, Sunita's elder sister, is her opposite in every way. She is happy to conform to all traditions and even got married at her parent's bidding at the tender age of eighteen. Then there is her grandfather who is quite practical and modern in his outlook and has always supported Sunita in her attempts at getting a degree and living her life as per her wishes. Akshay is our modern guy but still very respectful towards his parents and although educated abroad, cherishes his culture. Akshay's parents are modern day, practical parents who don't believe that a woman's place is in the kitchen and Mr. Malhotra has always encouraged his wife to stand on her own feet and live as she wants.

There are varied characters here and it is quite interesting to study them. I could empathize with Sunita and feel her helplessness. Even though its the twenty first century and people act all modern but still there are some who are still stuck in the age old version of traditions that give men more power over women. They don't want to move on with time and often force their family also to comply with them. Gokul's character is one such reflection of such people. Meanwhile Akshay's family stands for the practical minded people who value their family's happiness over traditions and are willing to change with time.

The scenes with Sunita and Akshay were warm, happy and fun moments where I definitely felt that true love originates from friendship. People become friends first before becoming lovers. The writing style of Sundari is simple yet very captivating and she is able to hold the reader and keep him engrossed in the story till the very end.

I loved this breezy love story which will connect with you instantly and you will feel like it is your own story or a story of a known person in your life. A story that is heart touching and which will leave you feeling happy and warm, I give The Malhotra Bride a 4 out of 5 and recommend that you read this sweet story of a girl who never wanted to marry but still happily became The Malhotra Bride!

Interesting idea spirals into debauchery - waste of time

It has a fun premise but is severely underdeveloped. The character lack depth and don't make sense. The sex at the end is a disappointing turn. A girl brought up strictly suddenly becomes a sexpot? An ambitious man with goals and a playboy history suddenly loses his mind at the sight of a beautiful girl? What started as a fun idea quickly turned into a muddled mess and ends in a cesspool of lust solely for the sake of titillation.

The Malhotra Bride; Sunita is a 20 something girl who is still trying to find herself in a world that is trying to mould her into a submissive puppet like most Indian women. That she finds her prince charming right at the first encounter is both unsettling and enchanting for her.

The premise of the story is the liberation of Sunita; who becomes a Malhotra Bride and how it is a win-win situation for both Akshay – billionaire hunk and Sunita – a beautiful damsel.
The story reminded of how it was to be so young and carefree, looking at the world with starry eyes. Dreams and hopes to fulfill and goals to achieve, even the naivety of Sunita reminded me of a time long forgotten in the grind of life.

It made me nostalgic, of first love, that innocent kiss that turned into something to cherish and those hot tempered tiffs that landed me into hotter fun. The straight forward storyline has a few quick surprises and naughty turns that mange to keep the interest going till the last page.

It is a novel for young hearts as well as old because Sundari has been able to strike a beautiful balance between the modern younger generation that manages to cherish the values and ethics of the old.

I recommend this as a read for everyone who values love and family from 18 years to 80 years because this simple romance novella shows that it is possible to love and respect both your lover and your families.

Good information for advanced industrial electrician, or engineer.

Generally good technical information. A bit of emphasis on "older style" electromechanical relays used for power system protection, but the principles are universal, and still apply to modern numerical relays. A very good choice for anyone who works "in the field."

I would certainly buy it again.

!001 Beers is well written by reviewers who have obviously tried these beers. This book is informative and as heavy as a 12 pack. I suggest opening all the way every 100 pages or so to exercise the spine. There are many great beers missing from this collection but that is mainly because there are so many localized micro-breweries with excellent beer that it is hard to keep up. A case in point, Pliny the Elder is in here but not Pliny the Younger.

Tons of photos and every page is of the same high quality paper, hence the weight. There are no ratings from 1 to 5 stars or anything like that, these are all quality beers and no ego comparisons are necessary.

If you like to buy/drink interesting beers this is the absolute definitive book to enhance your hobby. It also suggests the temperature each beer should be served at which will enhance it's taste and this is important especially to the American pallet which seems to like the beer much too cold for proper enjoyment. Read this and learn how to use the refrigerator much less and enjoy your beer much more.

Finally, life has some purpose! :)

I picked up this volume a few months ago and have been salivating over it ever since. It's chock full from cover to cover with sexy, glossy pics of some of the most beautiful brews you will ever lay eyes (and taste buds) on. Most are full page spreads showing the bottle with a properly poured glass, and several descriptive and/or background paragraphs, plus helpful tasting notes. Other beers are featured two to a page with only a look at the label (no other photo) and a shorter description, but still very adequate. Reviews also contain "vitals" on the beer, such as brewery name, location, year first brewed, ABV, etc. The book is divided into five major sections based loosely on the type of beer: amber, blond, white, dark and "specialty". Lastly, there's a handy index in the back organized by brewery for easy reference.

My only beef with this otherwise inspired volume is with some of the beers that were selected or omitted. For example, workaday schlock like Budweiser or Pabst are included for their "iconic" value, but infinitely better brews like Bell's Expedition Stout or some of the Founders product line, for instance, are left out. One wonders about the editor's sense of proportion in some of those selections. Still, this is an awesome book from cover to cover for anyone who enjoys fine beer. If you're groping for a sense of purpose in life, this book will help you find it.

a beer lover's delight

My husband and I love to sample microbrews; each month, we attend a beer tasting night at a local restaurant where a microbrewery is featured. I thought this would be a great gift for my husband and I wasn't mistaken. He's spent hours perusing the pages ... and he's not an easy guy to please!

The book is rich with terrific pictures of the beers. Each has its own page which offers a history of the brewery and the particular beer, including tasting notes. Weighing in at more than 950 pages, you know that you're going to get a thorough review of the world's greatest beers. While some are available locally, the rest can be enjoyed through the book ... sort of like coffee table book of the most beautiful places on earth that you can visit in your armchair. (This book isn't large like a coffee table book; instead it's of a smaller side and quite squat!

I find this book unputdownable, even though it fills me at times with despair, disgust and irritation. Kenneth Williams was a British actor and comedian of the 50s, 60s and 70s with an acute intelligence and a unique gift for comedy. He was gay, and for many years of his working life homosexuality was illegal. His comic persona used the "camp" stereotype and private language in a way that was far funnier than others in the same (small) field, or anyone since (Julian Clary, Graham Norton). He was widely read, inventive and gifted at ad libbing and eventually earned a living on chat shows and panel games. He had many friends in the theatre who obviously enjoyed his company. He was an excellent writer, one of the things that makes this diary worth reading. His writing is often as funny and perceptive as you'd expect from his public persona, revealing the surreal in the ordinary. But the diary also reveals a man with a dark side, someone who never found a way of living that made him happy. You long to say "Kenneth! Get some therapy!" His self analysis too often turns into navel gazing. He was tortured by guilt over his sexual feelings, constantly making contradictory statements and apparently trying to persuade himself he was above all that. He could also behave appallingly to people -- all faithfully recorded. He clearly came home and wrote the diary, justifying what he'd done. He certainly brooded over wrongs, but he often records apologising and making up. He has flashes of self-insight - that he really only feels at home among people outside his theatrical set. He really was extremely talented - and bigheaded with it. He must have been a nightmare to have in a cast, constantly thinking he knew better and trying to take over. Particularly in the early entries, he sometimes waffles on pretentiously, using long words you feel he doesn't quite understand, and giving an imitation of someone being profound. Then he'll follow the pomposity with a hilarious bit of observation written in a direct and slangy way. As a warts and all portrait, this is unequalled. And incidentally gives a fascinating insight into the stage/screen/radio/TV of the period. Sadly, he took his own life.

What is the storytelling animal?
Only humans tell stories. Story sets us apart. For humans, story is like gravity: a field of force that surrounds us and influences all of our movements. But, like gravity, story is so omnipresent that we are hardly aware of how it shapes our lives. I wanted to know what science could tell us about humanity's strange, ardent love affair with story.

What inspired you to write this book?
I was speeding down the highway on a gorgeous autumn day, cheerfully spinning through the FM dial, and a country music song came on. My normal response to this sort of catastrophe is to turn the channel as quickly as possible. But that day, for some reason, I decided to listen. In "Stealing Cinderella," Chuck Wicks sings about a young man asking for his sweetheart's hand in marriage. The girl's father makes the young man wait in the living room, where he notices photos of his sweetheart as a child, "She was playing Cinderella/ She was riding her first bike/ Bouncing on the bed and looking for a pillow fight/ Running through the sprinkler/ With a big popsicle grin/ Dancing with her dad, looking up at him. . ." And the young man suddenly realizes that he is taking something precious from the father: he is stealing Cinderella. Before the song was over I was crying so hard that I had to pull off the road. I sat there for a long time feeling sad about my own daughters growing up to abandon me. But I was also marveling at how quickly Wicks's small, musical story had melted me into sheer helplessness. I wrote the book partly in an effort to understand what happened to me that day.

But don't you worry that science could explain away the magic of story?
I get this question a lot. The answer is "No! A thousand times, no!" Science adds to wonder; it doesn't dissolve it. Scientists almost always report that the more they discover about their subject, the more lovely and mysterious it becomes. That's certainly what I found in my own research. The whole experience left me in awe of our species--of this truly odd primate that places story (and other forms of art) at the very center of its existence.

Children come up a lot in this book, including your own children. . .
Yes, I spent a lot of time observing my two daughters (in this I took my cue from Darwin, who was a doting father, but not shy about collecting observational data on his large brood). I got lucky. My girls happened to be 4 and 7 during the main period that I was working on my book. This is the golden period of children's pretend play. And I was able to observe them spontaneously creating these fantastic wonder-worlds, with these elaborate and dangerous plots. I noticed that my girls spent almost all of their awake time in various kinds of make-believe. And I was invited to enter those worlds myself, to play the roles of princes and Ken dolls and monsters. I learned a lot about the nature of story from my girls. Story and other forms of art are often seen as products of culture. But this perspective is one-sided. Story blooms naturally in a child--it is as effortless and reflexive as breathing.

Are dreams a form of storytelling?
Yes, they are. Dreams are, like children's make-believe, a natural and reflexive form of storytelling. Researchers conventionally define dreams as "intense sensorimotor hallucinations with a narrative structure." Dreams are, in effect, night stories: they focus on a protagonist--usually the dreamer--who struggles to achieve desires. Researchers can't even talk about dreams without dragging in the basic vocabulary of English 101: plot, theme, character, scene, setting, point of view, perspective. The most conservative estimates suggest that we dream in a vivid, story-like way for more than six solid years out of a seventy-year lifespan. So dreams are definitely part of the evolutionary riddle of storytelling.

What is the future of story?
In the digital age, people are reading less fiction, but this is because they've found new ways to jam extra story into their lives--on average we watch five hours of TV per day, listen to hours of songs, and spend more and more time playing story-centric video games. I think we are seeing, in video games, the birth of what will become the 21st century's dominant form of storytelling. The fantasy lands of online games like World of Warcraft attract tens of millions of players, who spend an average of 20–30 hours per week adventuring in interactive story. Players describe the experience of these games as "being inside a novel as it is being written." In upcoming decades, as computing power increases exponentially, these virtual worlds are going to become so attractive that we will be increasingly reluctant to unplug. So the real danger isn't that story will disappear from our lives. It is that story will take them over completely.

Uneven in Terms of Reading Enjoyment

Much of this 200 page book I found interesting and, in some cases, fascinating. However, there were parts where I simply lost interest, thinking that Jonathan Gottschall didn't need to go into as much detail. I also found the photographs annoying in places. They are poorly done, even iconic ones, and often there on a page without comment. There is another issue I have will I will address later.
For me the book confirms what I have long suspected: all of us live much of our lives in the land of fantasy but we seldom talk about it, probably believing that others will think one is crazy to admit that truth. But I readily admit it. I go to sleep telling stories. When I walk I tell stories. We all tell stories when we are engaged in sex. And don't deny it!
The opening chapter, "The Witchery of Story" is a great way to get started into this book. That may sound like a rather obvious thing to write, but in this case it is especially true. We don't want to live the lives of those who inhabit the pages of stories do we? But fiction would not sell if it told of our ordinary lives. Right? The author sets this up well.
I think "The Riddle of Fiction," the second chapter is excellent with one very important exception. The author makes an assumption which apparently Vivian Paley, the author of "Boys and Girls" also made in her so-called research: that all boys gravitate toward play that involves guns and the like whereas all girls gravitate toward dolls, etc. That is just so not so! And I, as a gay man, ought to know. Maybe he meant to say--but he didn't--that a majority do. But I sought any opportunities I could to play with my sister's dolls, leaving my toy guns to gather dust. And I know of many lesbians who had little use for dolls but a lot of use for the activities straight boys were involved in. Today one would think an author would take this into consideration. Dr. Paley's research is old. But quite clearly the author is writing only from a heterosexual's point of view. So off went one star because of that! So there!
I teach writing and literature. So I found "The Mind Is a Storyteller," the fourth chapter, really fascinating, that a majority of authors are probably bipolar. That must be why my writing isn't as good as I would want it to be. I am no bipolar. But when I read the chapter, I put the pieces together along with the drug addiction and alcoholism we associate with so many of these writers: Capote, Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Faulkner, Coleridge, Virginia Wolfe... A seemingly endless list. This sentence fascinates me: "Even college students who sign up for poetry-writing seminars have more bipolar traits than college students generally." There is no footnote for one to use to go to the author's souce, another flaw in the book in my opinion. And this: "People who are mentally ill tend to ahve more artists in their families...." Again no attribution to this statement although there is an extensive bibliography at the end.
I really enjoyed the last chapters: "The Moral of the Story," "Ink People Change the World," "Life Stories" and "The Future of Story." Indeed we do experience a lot of story telling today by a lot more people. That alone is fascinating given how our reading population is significantly less per capita than in the past. But not our media savy population who seek out all types of stories.
Chapter 6, "The Moral of the Story" isn't want you might expect, not about Aesop-type stories but instead about religions and their stories. Let me give you an example (page 119): "Guided by the holy myths, believers must imaginatively construct an alternate reality that stretches from the origins straight through an entire shadow world that teems with evidence of divinity. They must be able to decode the cryptic messages in the stars, the whistle of the wind, the entrails of goats, and the riddles of the prophets... Religion is the ultimate expression of story's dominion over our minds. The heros of sacred fiction do not respect the barrier between the pretend and the real." Then this two pages later: "We have religion because, by nature, we abhor explanatory vacuums. In sacred fiction, we find the master confabulations of the storytelling mind." Amen to that! And, of course, as the author then writes, the same is true of national myths. Just think about all the fictions of American history, the George Washington chopping down the cherry tree and not lying types of fictions. And then all of the virtues rewarded types of stories we have created. Humans just love to tell stories, often making claims about them being factual, all directed toward improving human behavior. But what is lacking in this chapter is how so many of these fictions have been the roots of wars.
Yes, I am convinced that I am right: much of our day and night is consumed in the stories we play out in our heads. Too bad we don't admit it and enjoy telling those tales, including the ones about the neighbor we would just love to see run down by a monster truck! And don't tell me all of us don't create those types of stories. All the time.

Engaging book, but acts as an introduction to the topic

Jonathan Gottschall looks into how and why humans are pulled to stories, making various cases and presenting interesting theories along the way. In my opinion, this book is a solid introduction to the subject, but not a fleshed out exploration. In this review, I would like to go through the most engaging parts for me and why I have come to certain conclusions or opinions.

Neverland never leaves us
The book begins by setting up the stage for this fascinating topic. It starts guiding us through various ideas (and even a test) to prove how bewitching stories can be. Gottschall uses the idea of Neverland throughout the book and it is mentioned in the first chapter. He starts by noting that children love spending time creating stories and enacting them. Then, he writes, "We may leave the nursery, with its toy trucks and dress-up clothes, but we never stop pretending. We just change how we do it. Novels, dreams, films, and fantasies are provinces of Neverland." He points out that humans never stop their involvement with stories. This seems quite true since there are many executives and producers that use story to move their customers and audiences. From the old ages where storytelling was mainly word-of-mouth to now where storytelling takes form in TV, movies, and even video games, stories have attracted us and I think they always will.

Why does Neverland never leave us?
The true question is why story has not been eliminated from human life through evolution. Basically, there has to be some sort of purpose for story. Otherwise, it would not have pursued to stay with us for so long. Some people think that fiction is used for a lot of things, like exercising the mind, passing down experiences, or forming a social glue among people. However, what if the alternative is considered? In my opinion, Gotschall introduces one of the most interesting theories here. Perhaps fiction is for nothing at all. It serves no purpose. At first, I thought this was a very poor argument to make. After all, story is all around us. If it was for nothing, wouldn't it have been eliminated through evolution, like mentioned before? Then, he makes his case, "Story may educate us, deepen us, and give us joy. Story may be one of the things that makes its most worthwhile to be human. But that doesn't mean story has a biological purpose." Although it seemed hard to believe (and I didn't want to think all my hours reading books were wasteful), it opened my mind. Maybe stories are for the sole purpose of enjoyment. We do many things that we have no value or need for, so maybe story is one of them.

Not just empathy, but sympathy
Humans cannot have stories if there is no conflict. If there is a story with no problems or interesting scenarios, the story is not at all engaging. The story does not elicit a response. Here, Gottschall finally started to bring in some science. As a current student in an introductory neuroscience class, I had been waiting for a neurological and scientific inquiry into why stories charm and move us. In one case, scientists used fMRI machines to monitor audience reaction. While watching the movie The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, it was discovered that "When Eastwood was angry, the viewer's brains looked angry, too. When the scene was sad, the viewers' brains also looked sad." With brain scanning, scientists were able to see that mirror neurons started firing in the brain. This caused the audience to have real, strong emotional responses that coincided with the story being told. They would not just empathize with the characters, but sympathize with them. However, this exploration into mirror neurons was short. There is not much more that Gottschall included, not that there needed to be any more with the point he was making. Still, I would have liked a little more meat, a little more scientific background into this topic. Also, there are some cases where audiences react more strongly to one scenario than another. It would have been great to learn the reasoning behind this. After all, not all movies elicit brilliant responses and become box office hits.

Jouvet's Cats
It is really strange to think about dreams, how they occur, why they occur, what causes one dream compared to another, etc. Gottschall explains some well known theories, such as one from Freud and the random activation theory (RAT). Jouvet's cats were intriguing to read about (again, my bias towards neuroscience coming into play). Jouvet severed the connection in the brain stem that signaled for paralysis in sleep in a few cats. During sleep, the cats would experience many scenarios of capturing prey or avoiding predators. Apparently, the dream world is filled with trouble. Again, there seems to be no story without conflict and since dreams are riddled with stories, they are riddled with conflict. Now that I think back to my own dreams (or those that I remember), it seems like they are all filled with trouble, sadness, or some sort of mission to resolve a dilemma. Perhaps dreams act as simulators then, preparing us for problems in the real world. This is something to think about.

To clean the chicken coop, of course!
The mind likes to invent stories, even if they are not real. An experiment conducted by Gazzaniga with split brain patients truly entertained me. Because of the way the visual system works, many split-brain patients were able to process images presented to both their left and right visual fields. One patient was shown a chicken's foot to the left and a snowy scene to the right. He was told to pick up two cards with pictures on them with both hands. He chose a chicken card with his right hand and a shovel card with his left hand. When asked why, he said he chose the chicken card because he saw a picture of a chicken's foot. However, he said he chose the shovel card not because he had seen the snowy scene, but because a chicken coop can be cleaned out with a shovel. It seems as if the initial images had been processed correctly in the brain and his hands chose the correct cards. However, the reasoning for one of the cards was a subtle lie. The brain didn't understand why the left hand had chosen a shovel due to the severed connection between the two halves of the brain. So, it made a reason up, to clean the chicken coop. This result was seen with other images and tests with different patients as well. It seems like the brain needs to create links. If it does not know the truth or reason behind something, it will create one. The brain will create stories naturally. This idea is quite scary... yet wondrous at the same time.

How fiction influences reality
I really liked reading the chapter on how "Ink People Change the World". It was interesting to learn of Adolf Hitler's fascination with Wagner's compositions and how they may have influenced his life of conquest. Although this chapter is more about speculation and theories that cannot be proven, I liked reading it since I do believe some stories compel and move people enough to make changes in reality. Gottschall says, "... when we are absorbing in a story, we drop our intellectual guard. We are moved emotionally, and this seems to leave us defenseless." Scientific explanations and research were not mentioned in abundance here. Yet, the idea that fiction can change real life doesn't seem difficult to believe after learning about how strongly we relate to it, feel it.

Style, Structure, and Overall Review
The book starts off at a great pace, building excitement for the coming chapters. It sets up the stage for this mysterious thing only humans seem to do: storytelling. Of course, the book is made more interesting by the way the author writes. His personality is clearly woven into the writing as he tries to interact with his readers through tests and relate to them through his personal recollections. I could do without some unnecessary pictures. At times, the images did not even have captions or explanations in the main text of the book. Still, Gottschall relays information well and the experiments mentioned were complimentary to the theories discussed. I do think the subject is too broad to be captured in this number of pages and at times, I needed to clarify which idea was proving what. Perhaps if the number of topics were reduced and more thorough investigating was done, I would personally be more satisfied with the organization and explanation of the material. Moreover, I wanted a more neurological background to our storytelling nature. I wanted to understand what exactly in our mind clicks and turns with story. I believe addressing this would give the book more substance, but it works as a great introduction to the material without it. In summary, this book gave a brief yet enjoyable introduction to our fascination with story. The author does try to research various materials, as shown in the long bibliography at the end. So, I would definitely recommend this book to a friend or anyone interested in taking a dip in the subject.

Entertaining and edifying but not authoritative

Gottschall presents story as central to human life. We are "Homo Fictus," he says.

The first few chapters look at children's play, fiction, and dreams, and conclude that an essential function of story is to prepare us for life's inevitable difficulties by running us through thousands upon thousands of trouble-based scenarios.

The next few chapters reveal story's centrality in daily life as meta-social narrative; as personal identity narrative; and, as moral compass; and, Gottschall demonstrates how fictions worm deep inside our minds, parasite-like, and exert a vast influence on our daily behavior. Hitler, for example, is shown to have been profoundly guided by Wagner's opera "Rienzi."

The book concludes by considering story's future, showing how fiction is encroaching more and more upon the territory of reality, and how we may soon be saturated in virtual worlds of illusion (more than we already are, if this is possible).

I recommend the book wholeheartedly to anyone interested in story; however, it left me wanting depth and comprehensiveness. It feels more like a series of charming magazine articles than a coherent work attempting to deeply master and illuminate its subject.

The book nicely conforms to the mold of popular contemporary non-fiction: fast-paced and peppered with anecdotes and soft social science research; provocative, but it doesn't make you think too hard (this can be a good thing, depending on what you're looking for).

There was room here, with a little more patience and a little less attention to commercialism, for a stellar, substantial book. The Storytelling Animal fails to provide definitive statements or true revelations, but it never fails to provoke and entertain.
