Experience makes clear that often they do not understand the software that they are using. This book aims to be a bridge between the software world and structural engineering. Therefore, this book starts with classical plate theory for membrane and bending states, and proceeds to FE-practice.

About the Author
Paul Stoller is a professor of anthropology at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of many books, including ethnographies, biographies, and memoirs. In 1994 he was awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2002, the American Anthropological Association named him the recipient of the Robert B. Textor Award for Excellence in Anthropology. He lectures frequently both in the United States and Europe and has appeared on various NPR programs as well as on the National Geographic Television Network.

Great ethnography

This is one of the most interesting ethnographic texts I've read. Stoller presents the material clearly, with intent, action, and solid, grounded explanations. He created a story explaining their culture, beliefs, customs, and stepped out as much as he could to make the focus on the experience of the Songhay, rather than on himself.

Great for Specialists!

The skinny: Buy if you're an ethnographer, anthropologist, or if you are visiting Niger. Otherwise, skip.

This ethnography is an academic upgrade to Stoller and Olke's In Sorcery's Shadow, which was their well-received memoir of Stoller's 10-year apprenticeship to a Songhay (Niger) sorcerers. Unlike the previous work of personal experience with more solitary sorcerers, Fusion of the Worlds attempts to show one spirit possession troupe's ability to operate in many different Songhay "worlds." That is, Stoller wants to show his readers how possession troupes often facilitate a variety of practices. These include the relationship between the individual and the group, remembering the past, engaging in political dialogue, relating Songhay religious practices with Islamic ones, and even negotiating rainfall. Possession troupes, like his from Tillaberi, Niger, are much, much more than performers--they are creating, maintaining, reflecting, identifying, mocking, celebrating, critiquing, and changing the Songhay world. Stoller claims they are fusing the world of the possession troupe and its performances with the rest of Songhay life. It is a mutually beneficial relationship, one which is actively and continually constructed by the troupe and its audience.

Stoller uses large sections of quotation, either from tape-recorder transcriptions or field notes, and he argues that this is really the best way to understand the Songhay. This may be true, but it makes appreciating Stoller's thesis much more difficult. The long sections of stories can be enjoyable, but it can also be laborious for those of us who many read this book without a desire to learn the intimate details of Songhay life. It delays academic discussions to privilege the many stories that help show the troupe's activities. This is fair in one sense, but it fails to provide a strong narrative thread for readers to follow. When Stoller has theoretical contributions, they are often short or delayed until the Epilogue. While some readers may be thankful for this, it was a more serious problem for me.

For instance, there are many useful implications of Stoller's suggestion that Songhay possession theater is much more than the framework for theatrical presentation of cultural history. However, when he argues that we should look to the "inner space" that is cultivated by these performances, readers should instantly recognize the cultural dilemma inherent in any interpretation he offers. Even as an initiate, the troupe's performances were never directed at him, and therefore the only access to the inner life of the Songhay is through language. Stoller musk ask, and his participants must answer him. Thus, the entire work is one of translation where Stoller does his best to make sure that his translation is recognizable to BOTH the Songhay (for accuracy) and his English-reading audience (for intelligibility). When he claims that more is going on inside, we should be aware that his translation has now moved into interpretation and theorizing. This isn't a bad thing--after all it is most scholars' goal to say something meaniningful--but it may mean that the very idea that possession might act as a "microcosm of Songhay culture" is closer to what an observer (and not a participant) would say.

Is this nitpicking? No. The integration of interpretation and transcriptions has been achieved with better results by others authors. If reading about poession is your thing, I encourage you to reader Stoller. However, if you want a BETTER book about possession, I encourage you to read Mama Lola instead.

Possesion beyond watching the exorcist

Stoller does an excellent job explaining the various types of possesion ceremonies among the Songhay culture. It's fascinating to picture how the spirits of the outside world can enter a mediums body to basically communicate with the people of Songhay regarding good and bad things occuring within the community. These people turn to the spirit world turn recieve help with settling disputes, having a good harvest in the future, venting their hate for colonialism,etc. But, not only does Stoller do a good job of explaining these various types of spirits, but he also does a wonderful job of interpreting many fascinating ceremonies that he attended. You feel like your actually there, witnessing a spirit taking over a medium's body. I am currently a student of Stoller's, and it was our assignment to read this book. I liked it very much I am continuing my reasearch of spirit-possesion in the future to learn all I can about a subject that's so intriguing. Stoller's book is awesome!

An Orthodox theologian for the Western mind

Of all the material I have read dealing with the creation of Adam and Eve and their subsequent fall from innocence and holiness, Saint Symeon's homilies are among the best. Considering the limited material that Symeon has to deal with, I am amazed at the level of insight and knowledge that he gleens from the text. Symeon deals with such topics as Adam's and Eve's original created state and their purpose in the garden of Eden. Being of an Orthodox persuasion Symeon sees a strong message of Theosis in the beginning of Genesis. He argues that Adam and Eve were created holy and sinless, but that they were not created perfect since they still had the potential to sin and bring death and suffering into the world. Adam and Eve were created as innocent children who needed to grow in holiness as they obeyed the Lord and followed Him.
One portion of this book that I really liked was Saint Symeon's homily on the events immediately after the fall. Symeon understands God's calling to Adam in the garden as God's attempt to bring Adam and Eve to repentance and to ackowledge their wrong doing. God was giving them every opportunity to repent and he would have shown them mercy had they only admitted their trangression and sought God's forgiveness. This was an angle I had never even thought of before and really made me appreciate this section of the Genesis story. In addition, I love how Symeon understood Christ's work on the cross as the remedy to the disobedience in Eden. Just as Adam disobeyed at a tree and brought death and suffering into the world, Christ's obedience at the tree brought life and hapiness to those who believe in Him.
I really think individuals from a Western Christian perspective could really benefit from Saint Symeon's teachings. There are so many elements in his homilies that are similar to Protestant teaching, that I think people would find much to agree with. The Orthodox are often accused of having a less severe view of the fall and sin than the West, but Symeon's own words completely shatter this false assertion. Symeon refers to Adam's trangression as an act that brought a sinful nature upon all humanity. Symeon states that people sin because they are slaves to sin and not vice versa, and he even argues that everyone is unrighteous before God, even infants, because all are partakers in Adam's nature. I believe that Protestants will find much to agree with here, and they will also understand that the Orthodox do not take the sin issue lightly. Moreover, Symeon often refers to God's punishments as chastisements upon mankind for disobedience. Although chastisements are different than the Augustinian idea of judicial punishments, both the East and the West can agree that such maladies are God's response to man's sin. Although there are some differnces in thought I believe that everyone will benefit by reading this great theologian of the Eastern Church.

St. Symeon the New Theologian is often overlooked in the Western Church, but thankfully this is changing. This selection of his homilies concerning the fall of Adam and the nature of the Fall-Redemption relationship is very good; I recommend it highly. Father Seraphim's translation reads very well and allows one to focus upon the message of the text rather than on deciphering the writing. All in all, this is a wonderful book for anyone interested in Christian thought, be they Orthodox or no.

The Sin of Adam and the Redemption of Man

_The First Created Man_, compiled, edited and translated by Seraphim Rose, is a selection of seven Homilies by the St. Symeon the New Theologian concerning the sin of Adam, the fall from Paradise and the redemption brought about by Christ. St. Symeon is one of only three in the Church who have attainted the title "Theologian": the other two being St. John the Evangelist (of the Apostles) and St. Gregory of Nazianzus (of the Fathers of the Church). St. Symeon was a highly influential monk and abbot in the 10th and 11th century Byzantine Empire. He wrote extensively on theological topics and remains one of the most respected teachers in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Fr. Seraphim's translation comes from the Russian translation of the original Greek by St. Theophan the Recluse, a 19th century Russian bishop. The first part of the book is an introduction to the life and teachings of St Symeon. The second part is the seven Homilies. Man, when he first lived in Paradise/Eden, was not distracted and out of direct contact with the Divine as he is today. He did not have to strive against creation to survive, and was not burdened by the pain, hunger, thirst, lusts of the flesh and endless toil unto death that sums up human existence since the Fall. When Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit against God's commandment, they did not receive Divine Mercy at that point because they did not repent of their sin and had listened to the councils of the serpent. God, in time, did redeem man from his cursed state, in the person of Jesus Christ, who died so that man may be free from death and have life with God in Heaven, a return to Paradise, a return to the original Golden Age. The Cross/tree that Jesus was pinned on to save man is the counterpart of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden that destroyed man. At the end of time, teaches St. Symeon, God will create the new Heaven and Earth. The material world will be dissolved by the Divine fire and the new Earth will be one in which there is direct communion with God, the pure essence of Being that transcends all that can be perceived by the senses or human thought.

an introduction?

McGinn is known as one of the great scholars of Western mysticism and Meister Eckhart as one of its greatest, most complex representatives. Therefore, a book by McGinn about Meister Eckhart must be a treat. Well, I wish it were so. Having read the book cover to cover, I asked myself what audience McGinn might have had in mind. It seems to be an introduction for experts, a contradiction in terms. Here is what I mean: Discounting a chapter in which McGinn in dissertation fashion discusses current scholarly trends on Eckhart and a concluding appendix on Eckhart's sources, this book of 305 pages contains only 145 pages of interpretative text. These 145 pages are weighed down by 75 pages of endnotes (almost 800 in number). And the interpretative section itself? Written in the most cumbersome, convoluted style possible. Admittedly, if one stays with it--following explanations that often exhaust themselves in references to other well-known theologians and mystics (pseudo-Dionysius, Augustine, Aquinas, Bernard of Clairvaux etc.) and even lesser known theologians and mystics (Dietrich of Freiburg, Berthold of Moosburg, Marguerite Porete etc.)--McGinn does give us the outline of an amazingly profound thinker and mystic. But the sheer forest of scholarly information seems all too often to obstruct and numb rather than clarify and enliven. Does an admittedly very difficult subject need to be interpreted in such a difficult way? By no means. Those who don't believe that it is possible to deal with complex, profound thinkers in clear and even elegant prose ought--for example--to read Denys Turner's recent book on Thomas Aquinas (not exactly a scholarly lightweight) or his earlier works an apophatic theology and mysticism. McGinn emphasizes that Eckhart wanted to be a "Lebemeister" (a guide to living) rather than a ""Lesemeister" (a guide to learning). It is unfortunate that McGinn has written so much of his study in the vein of the latter and so little of it in the spirit of the former.

A Marvelous Analysis and Elaboration

"The Mystical Thought of Meister Eckhart" is a scholarly analysis of and elaboration on the great mystic Meister Eckhart's teachings. And to my mind, Bernard McGinn does a magnificent job clarifying and amplifying the Dominican's thought. McGinn possesses deep and intimate familiarity with Eckhart's teachings and great knowledge of mysticism in general, and this combination enables him to shed powerful, demystifying light on Eckhart's sermons.

This book is the third one I have read by Bernard McGinn--the other two are "The Foundations of Mysticism" and "The Growth of Mysticism"--and even though I am a teacher-writer of mysticism, I have learned important new things from each of them. Because Meister Eckhart is my favorite Christian mystic, I particularly appreciate the insights on him and his teachings provided by Professor McGinn in this book. Anyone looking to grow his understanding of Eckhart and/or his teachings should read this fine study.

A very good introduction to Eckhart

Meister Eckhart, for those who know only his name and his association with mystical thought, probably think of him in the same category as Julian of Norwich or Theresa of Avila. He was about as much different from Julian of Norwich, and still be in the church, as you could imagine. Eckhart was first and foremost a theologian, possibly among the best in the last centuries before the Reformation, in the generation just after Thomas Aquinas. And yet, just as his work is not overladen with mysterium tremendum (that was a 20th century invention) it is not highly structured, reading much like an infantryman's drill manual. It is also not abstruse in the direction of the great logicians such as Peter Abelard and William of Occam.

For the reviewer who complained that there were none of Eckhart's own words here, I recommend he consult a good book of Eckhart's sermons, and give Professor McGinn all the room he needs to expain Eckhart's work, and that is no mean feat. Eckhart shared with many Christian AND Jewish philosophers of the Middle Ages the notion that there is nothing accurate we can say about God. The closest we can come is to imagine him as "nothing". That was Eckhart's interpretation of Paul's experience on the road to Damascus, where he went blind. His experience of God was to see nothing.

As other reviewers noted, in spite of this elusive position, McGinn, a leading expert on Medieval spirituality, does a fine job of explaining Eckhart's ideas. If I were to fault him on anything, it would be that McGinn dives us little from works which have not yet been translated into English, such as Eckhart's commentary on the Gospel of John. I have read no other expositions on Eckhart, but I would be hard pressed to see how they could improve, except by covering writings McGinn does not touch.
