Star Struck

Great instructions for what appears to be a challenging project. The detailed instructions are suitable for a beginner but make sure you read the introductory pages. I bought this because I was fascinated with the strip piecing method of tumbling blocks that Marci demonstrates. It makes the construction of projects simple and so professional looking. Can't wait to get my hands on the ABC 3D Tumbling blocks book just released.

Easy way to make star blocks, with amazing results!

With this book, I have just discovered a different way to put stars together, and can't wait to try it out. It uses a Clearview Triangle 60 degree ruler, which I just bought, as you strip-piece the stars. Yes, instead of sewing Y-seams, you sew stratas, cut them with the ruler, align the pieces and sew them on strips, then join the strips to make the stars.

Marci gives an overview of how to cut the stars using the Clearview Triangle ruler at the beginning of the book, and then covers it in more detail under General Instructions (pay special attention to the pictures, and to how the ruler is turned different ways as you cut the strata). However, the tutorial videos posted on her site (find them here) are, in my opinion, indispensable for understanding the process and getting it right.

The patterns on the book are so tempting! I can' wait to make them...

About the Author

Marcelo Marcio Soares - Professor Marcelo Soares is currently Professor at the Department of Design and the Department of Industrial Engineering at the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil. He is also invited lecturer at the University of Central Florida, USA, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal and the University of Guadalaraja, Mexico. He holds an M.S. (1990) in Production Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was also awarded the Ph.D. at the Loughborough University, in England. Dr. Soares is Professional Certified Ergonomist from the Brazilian Ergonomics Association, which he was president for seven years. He has provided leadership in HFE in Latin American and in the world as member of the Executive Committee of the International Ergonomics Association. He was also appointed as the Chairman of IEA 2012 (the Triennial Congresses of the International Ergonomics Association) which was held in Brazil. His research, teaching and consulting activities focus on manufacturing ergonomics, usability, product design, information ergonomics and applications of Virtual Reality in products and systems. Professor Soares currently serves on the editorial board of Theoretical Issues in Ergonomics Science, Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing and several publications in Brazil. He has more than 180 papers published in congresses worldwide and several books and book chapters. He has undertaken research and consultancy work for several companies in Brazil. Prof. Soares is co-editor of the "Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Consumer Product Design: Methods and Techniques" and the "Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Consumer Product Design: Uses and applications".

Francisco Rebelo is currently Professor and Director of the Ergonomics Department at Lisbon University, Portugal. Is the head of the ErgoVR Unity of the Ergonomics Laboratory in the same University - http://ergovr.fmh.ulisboa.pt/ mainly involved in the modelling of Virtual Environments to study and optimize the human interaction in Ergonomic Design. Francisco Rebelo is European Professional Certified Ergonomist and belongs to the council member of the Centre for Registration of European Ergonomists since 2003. He is responsible for projects financed by the European Union, Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology and companies, like NOKIA, Siemens, Novabase, Volkswagem, Embraer.

Comprehensive and valuable

Barry Forshaw's book is a comprehensive treatment of the crime fiction of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland that is available, or likely to become available, in English. He includes both authors who are now well-known--Henning Mankell, Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbo, for example--and a large number of less-known authors from these countries, many of whom are destined for success in the English-language market. Forshaw compares these authors to each other and to British and American authors of crime fiction. He demonstrates intimate knowledge of the individual works of a very large number of authors. Forshaw also addresses important issues in translating and publishing Scandanavian novels and includes the perspectives of important translators and publishers, often in their own words.

Throughout the book, strong themes relate the authors' treatment of crime to the social welfare state, cracks in the social democratic ideal, and differences and similarities among the Scandinavian countries. The author addresses both the darkness present in much Scandinavian crime fiction and the fact that it generally overestimates the relatively low incidence of crime in the locales depicted. Many references are provided. From the popularity of Stieg Larsson's trilogy and Henning Mankell's Wallander mysteries, it is obvious that many English readers value the insights into the Nordic cultures and what Forshaw describes as the audacious and ambitious treatment of crime fiction provided by Scandinavian authors--this book is a valuable resource for those who either want to have a better understanding of what they have read or find new authors to enjoy.

Love Nordic Noir!!!

I used this book both to better understand the origins of the Nordic Noir genre as well as to find recommendations for more authors to read. Prior to reading this "review of the literature", I had not fully recognized that one of the reasons I like this genre much more than American (or even English) detective suspense novels has to do with the political nature of the plots as well as the more fully developed characters. Some of the novelists that I have read as a result of this guide include: Camilla Lackberg ("Ice Princess"-Sweden); Karin Fossum ("Don't Look Back" -Norway); Jussi Adler-Olsen ("Keeper of Lost Causes"-Denmark); Johan Theorin ("Echoes From the Dead"-Sweden); Jo Nesbo (all of the Harry Hole series) & Håkan Nesser (his detective Van Veeteren: "Mind's Eye" & "The Return" -Sweden). If you are drawn to this dark genre, I would definitely recommend this overview of the history of its development in each of the Skandinavian countries as well as its influence on film & television ("The Killing").

mostly comprehensive guide to Scandinavian crime fiction

This guide to Scandinavian crime fiction is not perfect but it is fairly vast and, for my purposes, gave a lot of information about authors I didn't know about yet. I wanted to read this book for two reasons: to find more authors in the genre, and to get some insight into what makes Scandinavian thrillers so much more interesting, more fun, more thrilling! I would say the book was more successful on the first count; I now have a big list of authors to check out and I'm very happy about that! Even though I scour Amazon reviews, lists and recommendations, I still got information about plenty of both established and new authors that sound interesting. And the author doesn't just give a list of names. There's enough information given to decide whether or not a writer seems interesting to you personally -- whether the books are psychological, procedural, noir, etc. Author Barry Forshaw has done his reading.

In regard to the second purpose, though, trying to tease out what makes these books so appealing, I believe the author was less successful, though he did try. The emphasis is on translation and the influence of living in a social democracy. There was excellent coverage of each country (Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark) and its most popular writers as well as the introduction of new authors who are not as well known but about to be, based on discussions with publishers; I really enjoyed the characterizations and distinctions made about the various nations. Also, many authors are interviewed and asked about their ideas, how living in Scandinavia affects their writing, and which are their favorite books, among other things. This was all quite interesting reading. I also learned a bit about the translations.

I have two complaints about the book, however -- one trivial, one not. The trivial complaint is that the book is somewhat repetitive. The author makes the same points several times, even using the same words. And make sure you know the words 'adroit' and 'trenchant' because they are used over and over and over. Get a thesaurus! My less trivial complaint is this: What I truly love about these great thrillers is not that they're taking place in social democracies. What I love is that almost without exception these authors play with the narrative, either through shifting perspectives or complex manipulation of the timelines. It's remarkable to me that this is such a strong trait in Scandinavian thrillers, but relatively rare in mysteries and thrillers from American authors. I love the playfulness and, yes, adroit manipulation of the narrative, but that is barely mentioned here, and I think it's a huge omission. Also, there is no discussion of the great characters in these books. Correction: there is a superficial description of detectives Erlendur, Carl Morck, Anna-Maria Mella, Fredrika Bergman and Maria Wern et al. I would have appreciated a more in-depth look at these characters as well as their similarities and differences, or how they manifest their particular nationality, etc. I also really enjoy the quiet humor in these books but no discussion of that is here, not even a mention, yet to me it is one of the most striking things about these phenomenal reads. It would have been fun to read the author's ideas about what makes the Scandinavian sense of humor unique and how that is expressed in these novels.

Despite these omissions I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to those who enjoy Scandinavian thrillers and want to find more authors to check out. The book isn't complete, but I guess you have to leave something for the other authors too. What it does cover, it covers well. Perhaps the author will now attempt a more subjective survey? i would buy it.

With the marked increase in life expectancy achieved during the past century, we can expect that the elderly population will continue to grow disproportionately during the next 50 years. The oldest of the elderly, persons 85 years of age or older, now represent the fastest-growing group not only in developed countries as a whole, but also in emergency departments, intensive care units, and hospital wards. In recent years, much has been learned about the physiologic and pathologic consequences of aging and the varied clinical manifestations of disease in the elderly. The spectrum of illness in middle-aged adults is similar to that in older adults, but the prevalence of various entities differs. In elderly people with diminished functional reserve and coexisting illness, an acute disease often causes perturbations in multiple systems. Clinical presentations may be relatively nonspecific, and mortality is almost always higher than in younger patients. Consequently, diagnostic and therapeutic planning for older patients must be tailored to meet their differing needs and objectives. Unfortunately, there are comparatively few off-the-shelf works a busy clinician can refer to when caring for acutely ill elderly patients. Acute Emergencies and Critical Care of the Geriatric Patient will help to fill this void.

This book consists of four sections that cover the basic principles of critical care, topics related to surgical emergencies and medical emergencies, and special issues. A strength of the book is that each of its 25 chapters can serve as a stand-alone reference for rapid review. Yet the text flows nicely from chapter to chapter, making it easy to garner a comprehensive survey of this area of medicine. The chapters are consistently organized, with clear headings in outline style. As a multiauthored book, it benefits from strict adherence to this unified organization. There are many easy-to-read summary tablews as well as numerous figures that enhance the text. The chapters are well referenced, are organized according to system, and provide useful, though somewhat broad, surveys. Throughout, several thematic issues -- including reduced functional reserve in various organ systems (homeostenosis) and atypical or muted clinical presentations -- and an emphasis on general principles combine to form a cohesive and useful work.

The first section of the book, "Principles of Geriatric Critical Care," focuses on older patients in the emergency department and critical care unit, with particular attention to geriatric pharmacology and the unique nursing needs of the elderly. The second section, "Surgical Emergencies," provides a review of preoperative evaluation, emergency anesthesia, common injuries, the acute abdomen, and vascular catastrophes. Although it is solid and filled with interesting teaching pearls, this section suffers somewhat in comparison with the other sections, especially because of a tendency toward oversimplification of complex concepts.

The chapters in the section entitled "Medical Emergencies" are very well written and provide an outstanding survey of internal medicine in the acute care of elderly patients. Although the chapters overlap somewhat, they are generally complementary and reinforce important facts and concepts. The final section in the book, "Special Issues of Aging," deals with a variety of other important topics related to geriatric acute care, such as elder abuse and acute loss of vision.

This book would be a very good supplement to a complete textbook of medicine. Consistently emphasizing relevant general principles, it will enhance readers' understanding of many problems in the acute care of elderly patients. It will be an excellent resource for all those who care for the elderly in acute care settings.

Not really a review, more of a tip.

I have wanted to read "Lolita" for years. The most useful advice I can give to someone else considering making this puchase, would be to consider buying "The Annotated Lolita." I bought a copy listed as "complete and unabridged" because i was afraid another copy would be edited. It is a controversial book after all. I didnt want to get an abridged version. There are many foreign passages in this book that went over my head. I was unable to find a website devoted to all the interpertations I needed for "Lolita." I was forced to chose between taking a break from reading to google search passages as I came across them, or to skim over them when I was too engrossed to put down the book.
Spare yourself from this hassle and just buy "The Annotated Lolita."

Think you have a problem

I choose this book to read because it was on everyone's Top Ten or Top Twenty must read books. If you are going to read this book and you don't speak or understand French, get an academically notated version. There are many French words and passages, that a lot of the book is lost. You might also want to keep an English language dictionary handy because there are so many archaic words used that even an educated person will have to look up a couple hundred of them. The book deals with obsession to the extreme. I can see why the the book was so controversial when it first came out. Pedophilia is the the only thing that is still Taboo in the American culture and as it should be. The damage done to the psyche of a person molested at an early age is a life long struggle.

Simply amazing

It should be impossible to make a book told from the vantage point of a child molester compulsively readable, but Nabokov manages to do just that. The book is not about sex (or rape, since Lolita is underage, though that does occurs in the story (never explicitly described)). It's about obsession, moral blindness, and loss, and maybe even about redemption, after a fashion. It is so spectacularly well-written that's it's mind boggling that English was Nabokov's third language. In addition, the prose is fiendishly clever, but never obscure. The book loses nothing if you don't catch any of the subtle clues and hidden meanings in the writing (I missed most of them the first time I read the book); it just gives you an opportunity to read this gem of a novel again, and get as much satisfaction out of it as you did the first time. True literary genius is hard to come by. Don't let this one slip through your fingers.

An amazing book!

Roman Woodworking by Roger B. Ulrich is a comprehensive and fascinating work on Roman woodworking, aimed at classicists, historians, and modern woodworkers. However, it is a great source too for ordinary folk with an enquiring mind and interested in the Ancient Roman world. And fiction writers looking for background information should take note.

The book is written in an easy prose, and the illustrations are photographs from museums and other institutions as well as models and drawings by the author himself, plus the occasional chart or table. There are in all 205 black & white illustrations. The 400-page figure is deceptive, as the book is printed in the rather narrow Quadraat font, which takes a bit of adjustment to aging eyes.

The author draws heavily on ancient historians, among them Pliny's Natural History, Vitruvius' On Architecture, Isidore's Origins, Strabo's Geography, and Cato's de re rustica. Archaeological data include tools of all imaginable kinds, other artifacts, paintings from Herculaneum, scenes from Trajan's Column, the latter frequently referenced, and even a gilt decorated glass vessel in the Vatican Museum; and dedicatory and funerary monuments, which show many tools and working scenes. The paintings and the Column present mainly architectural structures, but not exclusively. In addition, Mr. Ulrich references a number of modern authors, beginning with Technologie und Terminologie der Gewerbe und Künste bei Griechen und Römern (Hugo Blümner, 1884). Until now, this topic had been mainly addressed by European scholars.

he cross-referenced Glossary of Roman Woodworking Terms, set in small font type, takes up 67 pages. There is also an Appendix: Archaeological Evidence of Roman Woodworking Tools, and of course a bibliography.
