Classic HGB

Having read "Having it All" and "Sex and the Single Girl" about 80 times each, I was thrilled to find this book for sale. I'm only 34 but Helen's breezy, funny, irrevant style is timeless, ageless, and unforgetable. Sure, some stuff is dated and a bit sexist, but Helen is the ballsy, brassy dame we all wish we had in our lives giving us "the straight story". Funny, interesting, and full of that inimiatble Helen sass, it's a bargain!

Helen Gurley Brown was an interesting woman, This book was fun to read due to her sometimes outrageous views and she gives valuable advice to those of us over 50. It is dated of course, but not across the board. I have ordered a few more of her books because I enjoy her gutsy, outspoken style.

About the Author
Timothy Corrigan is a Professor of English, Cinema Studies, and History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. His work in Cinema Studies has focused on modern American and contemporary international cinema. He received a BA from the University of Notre Dame, and completed graduate work at the University of Leeds, Emory University, and the University of Paris III. His books include New German Film: The Displaced Image (Indiana UP), The Films of Werner Herzog: Between Mirage and History (Methuen); Writing about Film (Seventh Edition, Longman); A Cinema without Walls: Movies and Culture after Vietnam (Routledge/Rutgers UP); Film and Literature: An Introduction and Reader (Second Edition, Routledge); The Film Experience (Second Edition, Bedford/St. Martin’s, coauthored with Patricia White); Critical Visions: Readings in Classic and Contemporary Film Theory (Bedford/St. Martin’s, coauthored with Patricia White); and The Essay Film: from Montaigne, after Marker (Oxford UP, forthcoming). He has published essays in Film Quarterly, Discourse, and Cinema Journal, among other collections, and is also an editor of the journal Adaptation and an editorial board member of Cinema Journal. Patricia White is Associate Professor and Chair of the Program in Film and Media Studies at Swarthmore College. She is the author of Uninvited: Classical Hollywood Cinema and Lesbian Representability (Indiana UP, 1999) and numerous articles and chapters on film theory and culture. She is writing a book on women filmmakers and world cinema. She is a member of the editorial collective of the leading English-language journal of feminism and film, Camera Obscura, and she currently chairs the board of the nonprofit feminist media arts organization and independent distributor Women Make Movies. What beliefs do these heirs of the free-church movement, only loosely connected to each other, hold in common today? This first-of-its-kind book explores seven convictions shared by these churches, now on six continents, who have always insisted that what they believe will be reflected in how they live.

Theologian and teacher Alfred Neufeld, of Asunción, Paraguay, was asked by Mennonite World Conference to write this commentary on the seven convictions. In a rich and readable style, he fills out their meaning and significance, drawing upon Old and New Testament scriptures as well as examples and stories from history and current church life around the world.

Writing as a member from the Southern Hemisphere, Neufeld brings a fresh view to a movement that for more than four hundred years was active primarily in Europe and North America. (The majority of members now live in the global south.)

This book offers a fresh and up-to-date look at the core beliefs and the practices that have developed from them, held by Mennonite-related groups around the world today.

About the Author
Alfred Neufeld is a Mennonite theologian from Paraguay. An ordained minister, he has spent most of his professional life teaching and building up educational institutions. Neufeld is currently rector (president) of the Universidad Evangélica del Paraguay, a Protestant university owned by the Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian, Disciples of Christ, Mennonite, and Mennonite Brethren churches of Paraguay. He is also a visiting professor at the Basel-Bienenberg Mennonite Seminary in Switzerland. He lives in Asunción, Paraguay.

A good study...with a disclaimer needed.

A very helpful collection that reports on beliefs held by Anabaptists. It is interesting because what holds the Anabaptists together is not a collection of beliefs, but a commitment to follow Jesus. This book discusses
the commonly shared beliefs that are held by most Anabaptists, thus it is very helpful. But the reader should
remember that Anabaptists are not held together by a rigid doctrinal belief system that all members are
expected to accept. There are many Anabaptists with more Fundamentalist leanings who wish this would be
true, and they do have a following, but that is a semi-distortion of the central element of Anabaptist faith
which is "are you following Jesus". But the book is a good presentation of what most Anabaptists accept.

Ranging from universities to comparative practices, from Ezra Pound's failed ambitions as a Hispanist to Juan Ramón Jiménez's multilingual maps of modernismo, Rogers illuminates modernists' profound engagements with the formative dynamics of exceptionalist American and Spanish literary studies. He reads the provocative, often counterintuitive arguments of John Dos Passos, who held that "American literature" could only flourish if the expanding U.S. empire collapsed like Spain's did. And he also details both a controversial theorization of a Harlem–Havana–Madrid nexus for black modernist writing and Ernest Hemingway's unorthodox development of a version of cubist Spanglish in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Bringing together revisionary literary historiography and rich textual analyses, Rogers offers a striking account of why foreign literatures mattered so much to two dramatically changing countries at a pivotal moment in history.
