The Shadow Of What Was Lost (The Licanius Trilogy) (Volume 1), by James Islington

It has been twenty years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs - once thought of almost as gods - were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets. A representation of these laws is now written into the flesh of any who use the Gift, forcing those so marked into absolute obedience.

As a student of the Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war fought – and lost – before he was born. Despised by most beyond the school walls, he and those around him are all but prisoners as they attempt to learn control of the Gift. Worse, as Davian struggles with his lessons, he knows that there is further to fall if he cannot pass his final tests.

But when Davian discovers he has the ability to wield the forbidden power of the Augurs, he sets into motion a chain of events that will change everything. To the north, an ancient enemy long thought defeated begins to stir. And to the west, a young man whose fate is intertwined with Davian’s wakes up in the forest, covered in blood and with no memory of who he is…

Shockingly good debut novel! A+
By Donald T.
The Shadow of What Was Lost is the debut novel from James Islington. It's about two groups of magic using people, the Augurs and the Gifted. Both groups, because of a war long ago, are bound by the "Tenants" which restrict them from using their powers and to some degree, make them servants to those people who have no powers. There is a darker force, a greater threat, that comes into the story and forces the king to reconsider the Tenants and the people's need for the aid and protection that could potentially be provided by the gifted.
The story epic in it's scope. It's characters are rich and well developed. The plot starts simply and continues to expand as the story progresses. One of the things that sets this book apart in my mind is the masterful way Islington develops his story. It starts from one single point of interest and doesnt rush to introduce the new story lines. Islington beautifully saturates the reader into the core of the story before he starts to unfold the other story arcs. In many books with multiple plot lines, the reader completes a chapter with their favortie character only to be dissapointed when they start the next chapter to find that this next set of pages is about a character they care less about. They are forced to trudge through page after page of secondary story line before they get back to the plot they really care about. This is not the case here. Every time Islington deviates to a new plot line or character, it's not only essential to the story, it's so enjoyable to read. He's done an incredible job of building an entire novel full of interesting characters and storylines - and has done it all without falling into the trap of trying to do too much.
All in all, this book is fantastic and I'm shocked that this came from a first time author. I've not been this impressed with a debut novel since I read "The Warded Man" by Peter V Brett. "The Shadow of What Was Lost" is a must read for any fan of epic fantasy. It's an absolutely great read. Extremely well done!

Jordan fans...Sanderson fans...Everyone should read this book. It's a great book!

What a surprise to find such a good read. I am always looking for good clean fantasy that I can recommend to kids without a bunch of swearing or naked kissing. I am a huge Brandon Sanderson and Robert Jordan fan, but even WoT gets a bit racy. Islington has done a great job of creating interesting characters and he's not afraid to dump them right into conflict. Islington has successfully generated a unique plot with unexpected twists that will keep you on your toes. This book is smart. I was impressed with the complexity of the magical elements used and how well they were executed. Bravo.

Now, everyone buy this book so that Mr. Islington can get back to writing. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

The Audio version is also fantastic; bought that too. It is performed my Michael Kramer, the same narrator that did Robert Jordan's WoT and Sanderson's Mistborn and Stormlight series.

Epically Enjoyable
By P. Kinyon
I thoroughly enjoyed the Shadow of What Was Lost - epic fantasy at its best which created a dangerous addiction to reading just a little bit more to find out what happens next that cheated me of much-needed sleep. I consider the loss time well spent.
Despite its length, I was sorely disappointed when the story at last came to an end and can hardly wait for the next book in the series.

Well-written, the tale weaves together a variety of viewpoints and separate actions without leaving the reader confused. Spelling and grammar were near flawless, and the author's writing style made reading it a pleasure, allowing me to completely immerse myself in the detailed fantasy world.
